ALSO ARMENIAN VICTIMS COMMEMORATED ON TURKISH DAY
The 21st Turkish Day Parade was celebrated like a festival in the United States. During the parade, which was organized by the Federation of Turkish American Associations (FTAA) and the theme of which was determined as ''terrorism'', victims of the September 11th terrorist attacks, including the citizens of Greece and Armenia, were commemorated by carrying the flags of their countries by Turkish young people.

STUDENTS PROTEST YOK
Students who are the members of the Workers' Party protested draft law on Higher Board of Education (YOK) in Ankara. Street fighting occurred during the protest. A group including students who are the members of the Workers' Party (EMEP) convened around Guvenpark in Kizilay Square to protest draft law on YOK. Security forces did not permit march of the students and intervened in the group as they did not listen to their call. Nine policemen and CNN Turk cameraman was injured while 15 people were detained in the incidents.

HE WANTED TO SEE TURKISH UNIT
Rahsan Ecevit told about the illness of Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit in Baskent Hospital. ''Bulent stumbled and harsly hit his back in the living room. He called out to me. I immediately phoned Prof. Zileli when I heard that he hit his back. Prof. Zileli came and examined him. Meanwhile, Bulent's pains stopped.''
Rahsan Ecevit said, ''whenever we go to hospital, they create confusion. Bulent refrained that economy would be negatively effected. Doctors said his broken rib will recover itself. They did not consider his leg as important. They gave medicine and the swollen place in his leg recovered.
Speaking about Ecevit's insistence in going to Afghanistan, Mrs. Ecevit said, ''Bulent wanted to see the Turkish unit there. He still wants. We will go there when he recovers.''

TURKISH FLAG IN HONG KONG
Our national team which departed from Turkey with a great ceremony, was welcomed with a similar ceremony in Hong Kong where they will have friendly matches.
Turkish citizens there boosted the morale of Turkish national team with Turkish flags and flowers and singing songs at the Airport.

FIRST AVENUE ATATURK IN EUROPE
Ataturk, the Founder of Modern Republic of Turkey, is again on the agenda of the world 64 years later. Name of the Great Leader was given to an avenue in Vise municipality bound to Liege state in Belgium. Mayor Neven called on people not to digress from the path of Ataturk while Governor Bolland stressed that the name of Ataturk ''symbolized humanity.''

''BULENT IS NOT A CHILD''
Rahsan Ecevit, the wife of Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit, said, ''Bulent Ecevit decides whether or not to see and consult to his doctors. His consultations and meetings are organized according to his wishes. I did not intervene in him and I never do such thing.'' Rahsan Ecevit defined the criticisms that he prevented the Prime Minister from consulting to doctors as ''merciless and intentional.'' Rahsan

TERRORISM WARNING FROM UNITED STATES
U.S. State Department claimed that a terrorist attack might be staged at Ataturk Airport of Istanbul till May 22 and warned Turkey. Upon this warning, extraordinary measures were taken at the airports. Interior Minister Rustu Kazim Yucelen said, ''do not exaggerate the incident. We are the most secure country in the world in respect of tourism.''

YOUTH DAY
May 19 Commemoration of Ataturk, Youth and Sports Day is celebrated throughout the country, in foreign representations and in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) with enthusiasm. The activities will start in Ankara at 07:00 local time. A state ceremony will take place in Anitkabir, the Mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of Modern Turkish Republic, where President Ahmet Necdet Sezer and other high military and civilian officials will participate in.
President Sezer, who issued a message, called on youth, and pointed out that, ''you should be educated in a way to continue your living not only in Turkey but throughout the world at a time when important transformations take place throughout the world.''

CONFIDENCE SHOULD BE SOLID
Dogan Cansizlar, the chairman of Capital Market Board (SPK) said it was very difficult to recover when the confidence is shaken in financial sector, particularly in banking and capital market. Cansizlar said implementations should take place without making concession to prevent this. Cansizlar also pointed out the importance of this.

''SECRET PLAN'' EXPECTED BY DSP
The health problems of Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit and beginning of discussion on inter-party problems of the Democratic Left Party (DSP) turned the eyes on the ''secret plan'' of Ecevit, the outlines of which are known. Ecevit will leave the leadership but continue the prime ministry. The ''smooth transition'' plan of Ecevit was mainly as follows: Ecevit will leave the leadership during the congress in 2003 but continue the prime ministry. Thus, the government and the party will be prepared for the 2004 elections.

BAYAR TAKES OVER OFFICE
Mehmet Ali Bayar was chosen as the leader of the Democratic Turkey Party (DTP) with 594 votes. Bayar called on the majority to support reasonable and sensible solutions. Bayar got the votes of 594 delegates out of 621. All organs of the party were renewed during the elections.

MAY 19 ENTHUSIASM
The independence flambeau lit by Ataturk 83 years ago is still burning. The first ceremony to mark the anniversary of Ataturk's journey to northern Samsun province by which the War of Independence was declared will be held in Anitkabir, the Mausoleum of Ataturk, with the participation of President Ahmet Necdet Sezer and military and civilian officials. Also, a celebration will be held in May 19 Stadium.

FROM WHERE TO WHERE HAVE WE COME IN FIVE YEARS?
State Minister Kemal Dervis compared Turkey in 1997 and Turkey in 2002. Here are the figures: The domestic debt which was 6.3 quadrillion Turkish liras (TL) five years ago reached 122.2 quadrillion TL today. The foreign debt which was 84 billion U.S. dollars in 1997 climbeed to 115.1 billion U.S. dollars. One U.S. dollar which was equal to 205 thousand TL in 1997 is today equivalent to 1 million 455 thousand TL.

GOOD NEWS TO WORKERS
The validity date of the draft law on graded retirement was extended from 1999 to 2002. That is, the draft law will ensure three-year early retirement of millions of workers. If the draft takes effects, 81 deputies will become retired.

PRIME MINISTER ECEVIT WILL STAY IN HOSPITAL AT LEAST ONE MONTH
It was claimed that Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit reacted positively to the medical treatment that is being carried out. However, it was also claimed that he would stay in hospital at least one month. The discussion of ''proxy'' came to the agenda when the 15 days he stayed at his home is added to this period.
Policy in Ankara is interlocked to the news that will come from Baskent Hospital. The news that will come from there will determine the fate of the government.
Althought the statements of the doctors are optimistic, the allegations in the lobbies indicate that prime minister will stay in hospital at least one month.

NAME OF ATATURK GIVEN TO AN AVENUE IN EUROPE FOR THE FIRST TIME
An avenue was named as ''Ataturk'' in Belgium. This is the first time that an avenue is named ''Ataturk'' in Europe.
One of the biggest avenue in Cheratte town of Vise city of Belgium where many Turks are living was changed as Avenue Ataturk.
Turks started to live in Belgium as of 1955. Turkish people started to live in and around Cheratte, where mine pits were active, since 1963. Turks, who contributed to social and economic life in Cheratte since the mine pits in the region were closed in 1977, continued their existence in the region afterwards.
Liege State Governor Paul Boland and Vise Mayor Marcel Neven said that the avenue was the symbol of friendship with the Turks and Turkey.
