ANKARA (A.A) - 17.05.2002 - Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit will stay in hospital for one week due to a broken rib.
Officials in hospital said on Friday that Ecevit has a traumatic broken rib and infection in his left leg and he should be kept in hospital conditions for at least one week.
The visits of Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit to Afghanistan and Pakistan scheduled for 23-25 May and the visit of Syrian and Indian Prime Ministers to Turkey foreseen to be at the end of May have been postponed.
PRIME MINISTER ECEVIT SAYS HIS TEMPORARY ILLNESS NOT TO NEGATIVELY AFFECT THE ECONOMY AND POLITICS IN TURKEY
Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit said on Friday that his temporary illness would not negatively affect the economy and politics in Turkey.
Issuing a written statement, Ecevit said that there was no worrying development about his condition due to the results of the medical examinations done in Baskent Hospital.
''I will start to work more actively soon,'' he said.
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon called Ecevit on the phone and expressed his good wishes to him and added that he wanted the Middle East Conference to be held in Turkey.
PROF. DR. HABERAL: PRIME MINISTER ECEVIT'S VITAL FUNCTIONS ARE WORKING WELL
Prof. Dr. Mehmet Haberal, the Rector of Baskent University said on Friday that Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit's vital functions were working well.
Talking to press, Haberal said that Ecevit has a broken rib and tissue injury in his rib and there were initial signs of thrombophlebitis in his left leg, but his vital functions were working well.
Haberal told reporters that Prime Minister was not in a serious condition, adding that he should be kept under hospital conditions at least for one week.
He said that Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit had a check-up at 10.50 a.m. due to his pain in his back, and the edema in his left leg.
''There is no other disease than the ones I have mentioned. The neurological disease of Mr. Prime Minister is kept under control. During this one week, Prime Ministry Press Centre will issue statement about Ecevit's health when necessary,'' he said.
PRIME MINISTER ECEVIT'S LEG TO BE SUSPENDED IN SLING DUE TO THROMBOPHLEBITIS
Doctors said on Friday that the initial signs thrombophlebitis in the left leg of Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit stemmed from vein inflammation and his leg has to be suspended in sling.
Doctors told A.A that this disease would cause pain in the leg, adding that the leg should be suspended in the air and Prime Minister Ecevit has to rest. They added that this illness hinders him from travelling.
ECEVIT'S CONDITION NEGATIVELY AFFECTS MARKETS
The Istanbul Stock Exchange (IMKB) index decreased by 485 points following the statement that was issued due to medical condition of Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit.
One U.S. dollar increased to 1,42 million TL in Istanbul money markets.
The buying of one U.S. dollar has been 1,42 million TL and its selling price has been 1,44 million TL.
