BRUSSELS (A.A) - 15.05.2002 - Belgian weapon smuggler was captured in Istanbul last Saturday.
Jacques Monsieur, 50, an international weapon smuggler, has been accused of selling weapons to many countries especially to Iran.
As a result of initiatives launched by the United States, Monsieur was detained in France in 1999, and judicial process was launched against him. However, Monsieur managed to flee.
Later, Iran claimed that Monsieur was arrested in Iran on charges of spying, and did not allow him to hold talks with Belgian diplomats.
The United States, France and Belgium issued an international arrest warrant against Jacques Monsieur.
Brussels Prosecutor's Office confirmed that Monsieur was captured in Istanbul last Saturday, and expressed its uneasiness about press reports regarded with him.
It was alleged that American intelligence units contributed to seizure of Monsieur.
Belgium will make an official request to Turkey for extradition of Monsieur.
