CRISIS DID NOT EFFECT AUTOMOTIVE INVESTMENT
Economic crisis could not effect automotive industry investments. According to the data of Automotive Industry Association, automotive companies continued investments in crisis years. The investment, which was 372,000 U.S. dollars in 1999, increased to 421,000 U.S. dollars in 2000 when the crisis erupted, and later increased to 450,000 U.S. dollars when the effects of the crisis were deeply felt. Investments of the automotive companies continued in 2002.
The automotive companies did their investment the most for the new models. The total investments made for new models reached 343,000 U.S. dollars in 2001. This figure had been 114,000 U.S. dollars in 1999, and 224,000 U.S. dollars in 2000.

DERVIS: OUR FUTURE DOES NOT DEPEND ONLY ON ONE PERSON
State Minister Kemal Dervis said he wished Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit to recover soon.
Dervis, who made a statement to To Vima, the newspaper published in Greece, responded to the views that health condition of Prime Minister Ecevit could effect economy.
Pointing out that Turkey's economic situation did not depend only on one person, Dervis said, ''we have overcome the worst period. Inflation reduces, Rate of development increased. Balance of payments is on the right course. Central Bank reserves increase. However, we have experienced a very big blow, that was a crisis. Many people lost their jobs. Now that we are at the beginning of improvement period. However, this improvement has not been felt by the people yet.''
Stressing that the reforms realized in economy were important, Dervis said, ''Central Bank and banking system have become independent, and new arrangements were made in industry. All those have created the basis necessary for healthy functioning of economy. Thus, all necessary measures have been taken to prevent Turkish economy from being effected by short term negative political developments.''

SUMMIT FOR DEATH PENALTY
Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit thinks of going back to his normal working hours this week. Leaders' summit, which he plans to hold within the week, is on his agenda.
Ecevit earlier said he planned to discuss ''capital punishment, European Union, and Cyprus'' issues at this summit.
The most critical issue, of course, is the abolishment of capital punishment.
In the previous leaders' summit, a decision had been taken to hold works regarding abolishment of capital punishment and broadcast in Kurdish. These will be discussed at the summit of this week.
The reason of feeling the need to hold a special working on capital punishment was inclusion of PKK and DHKP-C into EU's list of terrorist organizations. Foreign Minister Ismail Cem stated that Ankara should take a step in response to the step taken by the EU.
Prime Minister Ecevit also favors lifting of capital punishment totally. It is known that he has been against capital punishment so far.

CHINA'S VARYAG TRICK
Chinese government is getting prepared to use Varyag as aircraft carrier. The giant ship Varyag could only pass from the Straits as it was shown in touristic ship status.
It was claimed that the Beijing administration is getting ready to turn Varyag into an active aircraft carrier.
''Agencia Turistica'' company had purchased Varyag from Ukraine to turn it into a touristic facility.
Varyag, which had waited for 16 months in the Black Sea, managed to reach Dalian Harbour, which is in northeastern part of China.
''Sunday Morning Post'' published in Hong Kong, said Varyag was waiting at one of China's biggest sea bases under wide-scaled security measures, and that this revealed the goals of the Chinese navy. The workers in the harbor also confirmed that there was a secret activity in Varyag.

DISAPPOINTMENT IN OIL WELL
Gokici-1 oil well in Ergani Township in southeastern Diyarbakir province was closed. Gokici-1 oil well, which is 20 km to Ergani Township, had been opened with very big hopes five months ago.
Officials of Turkish Petroleum Company (TPAO) said high gravity oil had been found in Gokici-1 oil well under 2,550 meters depth, but that later most of them turned into water.
Officials said later a decision had been given to drill 3,350 meters depth in the oil well, however that oil could not be found as a result of drilling.
Officials said decision was given to close the well.

HOT PURSUE IN BLACK SEA GIRESUN PROVINCE
A group of terrorists, including 6-7 people, abducted four people including Recai Zaim, the Democratic Left Party (DSP) Espiye Chairman, Ibrahim Akgun, Mayor of the Sogukpinar Hamlet, Ahmet Akbulut, the Espiye Forest Affairs Director, and the driver Mehmet Kulah in Yaglidere township in Black Sea Giresun province.
Gendarme forces and special team, after getting the information that terrorists abducted four people, launched a wide scaled operation and surrounded the terrorists in rural area of Akkoy village of the township.
The terrorists later released four people.

TURKEY IS THE UNLUCKY COUNTRY OF TOURISM
The New York Times said Turkey lost tourists because of two important incidents. The daily named those two incidents as August 17 massive earthquake and September 11 terrorist attacks. The daily evaluated Turkey as a secure county despite those incidents.

BUSINESSMEN: GOVERNMENT IS NOT SUCCESSFUL
Turkish Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges (TOBB) made an inquiry named ''expectations'', and this inquiry revealed that the businessmen did not have confidence in the government.
A total of 82 percent of the participants pointed out that they did not find the government as successful. It was reported that expectations of the government do not suit to the targets of the government.

CYPRUS WARS IN GOVERNMENT
Foreign Minister Ismail Cem who was indisposed with Motherland Party (ANAP) leader and Deputy Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz's statement on Cyprus began to act to make Yilmaz stop talking. Yilmaz will be asked not to make opposite statements against official policy in coming leaders summit. Yilmaz who spoke with the businessmen on Friday criticized Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Rauf Denktas for not being sufficiently constructive. The government and Denktas criticized Yilmaz due to his expression that the number of soldiers in the island will be more than Turkish Cypriots 10 years later.

IMKB CHAIRMAN BIRSEN: ''I AM HOPEFUL ABOUT FALL''
The Istanbul Stock Exchange (IMKB) Chairman Osman Birsen said that revival which will begin in economy with fall will affect firstly companies and then stock exchange positively. Birsen stated that the motors of economy will reach its normal working tempo in 2003. He also said that 2002 fall is a very important period for Turkey.

ELECTRICITY CRISIS
World Geothermal Association Deputy Chairman and Turkey Geothermal Association Chairman Orhan Mertoglu said that electricity cost affect the industry badly and added that they sell electricity with the highest amount to Turkish industrialists when compared to European countries. He said that illegal electricity usage is 1 billion 500 million U.S. dollars in Turkey and added that those who use illegal electricity darken the future of Turkey. Mertoglu pointed out that energy consumption is a leading criterion of the developmental level of a country and added that electricity means industry and development.

ECEVIT BEGINS WORK
Democratic Left Party (DSP) Secretary General Hasan Gulay visited Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit on Sunday. Gulay who responded the reporters' questions following the visit said, ''he seems very good and his morale is also good. I think that Ecevit will start work on Monday.''

QUAKE EARLY WARNING SYSTEM PREVENTED WITH FREQUENCY
The radio link equipment which were bought from Switzerland for ''Urgent Interference and Early Warning System'' which will warn Istanbul before the quake were manufactured to work in an illegal frequency forbidden by Telecommunication Board (TK). Scientists said that human health and wireless communication will be affected badly if this frequency is used.
