WILL PROMISES BE KEPT?
Those who hijacked Eurasia ferryboat were not considered as terrorist. Neither those who attacked Swissotel. Now, eyes are turned on Mustafa Yildirim, who attacked The Marmara Hotel. Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit signed an agreement on fight against terrorism with the Russians in Moscow in November 1999. According to diplomatic sources, Turkey promised to consider the actions made in the name of Chechnya within the scope of terrorism. However, the case of 13 terrorists who attacked Swissotel with kalashnikov rifles and guns were not considered within the scope of Anti-Terrorism Law. When the things could not be solved, the case was sent to the Supreme Court for overcoming of the dispute. A Supreme Court official said that attacks on hotels, hostage taking and ship hijack in favour of Chechnya should all be considered as ''crime of terrorism'' and be a matter of investigation by the State Security Courts (DGMs).

GREEK TEAM INCLUDING IBO BECOMES EUROPEAN CHAMPION
Greek basketball team namely Panathinaikos including Turkish player Ibrahim Kutluay became the champion of the European League. The Greek team which beated host K. Bologna in the final match in Italy 89-83 became the champion. Ibrahim Kutluay became the best scorer of the team with 22 baskets and contributed to European championship of Panathinaikos.

HERE IS THE DIAGNOSIS
The doctors of Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit announced the cause of the illness of Ecevit to Milliyet: Intestinal infection stemming from length of large intestine. The health report prepared by doctors of Ecevit put an end to the speculations about Ecevit's illness. The delegation of doctors including Baskent University Rector Prof. Dr. Haberal and Prof. Zileli said, ''Ecevit was suffering from intestinal infection. It is not a serious illness. His treatment was made as he was brought to the hospital. This illness does not have anything to do with the cortisone treatment.''

WE HAVE OVERCOME IT WITH LEAST HARM
Mustafa Yildirim, who took hostage 13 people at the Marmara Hotel, was taken to the spot for reenactment. Yildirim, who gave conflicting responses to the questions, said, ''I staged the attack alone.'' Tourism Minister Mustafa Tasar said, ''such incidents do not affect tours'' and relieved everybody.

INTERESTING SCENARIO
Here is the interesting scenario: Bulent Ecevit is the Parliament Speaker and Devlet Bahceli is the Prime Minister. Ankara is being shaken up with this formula. Parliament Speaker Omer Izgi said that he was ready for concessions. A very minor illness of Bulent Ecevit which can happen to everybody increased the rumours in the lobbies. The Prime Ministry is not vacant but Ecevit's illness added new questions to the questions continously asked in the lobbies. Of course, everybody is firstly searching for a response to the question ''whether Ecevit can continue to be in the office if the elections are to be held on time.'' Then, this very interesting formula is being reminded: Some circles think that Bahceli should become the Prime Minister and Ecevit the Parliament Speaker. There is also another formula including current Parliament Speaker Omer Izgi. Izgi can resign from the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and become ''an independent prime minister'' and Ecevit will complete the term as the Parliament Speaker. However, it is stressed that the government will continue in its current shape if Ecevit do not accept any of these formulas.

HE CAME BY ASSISTANCE BUT HE LEFT HOSPITAL ON FOOT
Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit, who left the hospital by smiling, said, ''I feel myself very well.'' Ecevit was discharged from Baskent University Hospital, where he was taken with the assistance of his guards, 26 hours later. He was very healty when he was leaving the hospital. Asked if he would go on a holiday, Ecevit laughed and said, ''we can ask Mrs. Rahsan.'' Asked if the attack on The Marmara Hotel had an effect on his illness, Ecevit said, ''I do not think so.''

The left, which lost power following September 12 military intervention, is expected to participate in coming elections with more than 10 parties.
Increase in the number of leftist parties gives the leftist voters the responsibility of providing unity in the basis.

YILMAZ WARNS EU
State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz said the organization, which is the continuation of terrorist PKK organization, should also be included in European Union (EU) list of terrorist organizations. ''Otherwise, the EU will be deceived by the terrorist organization.''

ANKARA WAITS FOR MEETING IN WASHINGTON FOR PEACE CONFERENCE
Turkey, which is getting ready to host Middle East peace conference, waits for the meeting that will take place between the U.S. President George W. Bush and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.
Foreign Ministry thinks the issue will be clarified following the meeting between Bush and Sharon.

MR. MINISTER HAS WAKEN UP AT LAST
According to the draft law prepared by the Agriculture and Rural Affairs Ministry, ecological agriculture will be made by rules. Certificate will be taken for ecological products and the producers who try to deceive consumers will be punished. These products will be sold in special stands with special labels and package. Agriculture and Rural Affairs Minister Husnu Yusuf Gokalp has launched initiatives for ''healthy production.'' The draft law on organic agriculture regulates the conditions of the production fields and enterprises, certification and supervision.

RETIREMENT ON THE WAY FOR THOSE WHO COMPLETE 30 YEARS IN PUBLIC SECTOR
After the workers, the compulsory retirement of the civil servants who complete 30 years in the public sector is on the agenda. There are more than 29,333 civil servants who have worked for 30 years in the public sector and who are above 55 years old.

AGAIN HISARCIKLIOGLU IN TOBB
Rifat Hisarciklioglu was chosen as the chairman of the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB) again with 105 votes in favour. Nail Kalemci gained 83 votes in favour.

IMF: THOSE MORE THAN 55 YEARS SHOULD BE RETIRED
According to a plan prepared by Finance Ministry, 29,333 civil servants, who completed 30 years and came to the age of 55 years old, will be retired compulsorily.
If those people are retired in 2002, their cost to the state will be 177.367 trillion lira.
International Monetary Fund (IMF) is also insistent on number of the retirement of civil servants.

KANADOGLU WARNED, REGULATION CHANGED
Justice and Development Party (AK Party) took into consideration the warning of Supreme Court of Appeals Chief Prosecutor Sabih Kanadoglu and changed quota authority of the leader which is included in the party regulations.
AK Party founder members committee completed its two-day meeting and excluded quota authority, given to the leader, from the regulations, in line with the warnings of Kanadoglu.

BAHCELI DUE TO AZERBAIJAN
Devlet Bahceli, the leader of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, will go to Baku, Azerbaijan on Monday.
Bahceli ,who will pay an official visit to Azerbaijan as the guest of Azerbaijani President Haydar Aliyev, will return to the country on May 8.
Bahceli will meet with Aliyev, Azerbaijani Parliament Speaker Murtuz Alasgarov, Prime Minister Artur Rasizade and political party representatives in Azerbaijan. He will take up international and regional problems and cooperation in political, economic, cultural and other fields during his meetings with Azerbaijani officials.

AFGHAN PEOPLE EMBRACE TURKISH SOLDIERS
Afghan people show great interest in the Turkish unit, deployed in Afghanistan's capital city Kabul. The Turkish soldiers, the only Moslem unit within International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), are assigned in the market place, which is the most crowded and dangerous place of Kabul.
Uzbek and Turkmen origin Afghans, who came near patrolling Turkish soldiers and commanders, shake hands with the Turkish soldiers saying that, ''we are also Turkish.''

QUAKE IN MARMARA REGION
An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.3 on the Richter scale, occurred off shore of Imrali Island in Marmara Sea at 12:22 local time.
Most of the residents of Istanbul and Bursa provinces did not feel the quake.
Prof Ahmet Ercan said the quake was an independent one.
