ANKARA (A.A) - 01.05.2002- May Day celebrations were held in Turkey without any major incident.
The celebrations which were held in Tandogan square of Ankara ended.
Addressing the crowd, Labour Platform's Term President and Hak-Is Chairman Salim Uslu said that ''the whole world watches the violence seen in Palestine. The peoples react to it, yet states and international organizations don't take a step to stop this violence.''
Claiming that globalization supported with IMF policies threaten the whole world, Uslu said that ''they won't be successful. We won't give concessions from our independence and future.''
Criticizing the economic policies of the government, Uslu called the government to take a decision to hold early elections.
People shouted slogans saying ''Damn IMF, Independent Turkey,'' ''Murderer Sharon, Get Out From Palestine,'' ''Victory will be those labourers who resist!''
Tight security measures were taken in Tandogan square.
May Day was also celebrated in southern Adana province with a public meeting organized by trade unions, political parties and other non-governmental organizations.
The rally which was held in Caglayan square of Istanbul ended around 14.00 local time. Shouting slogans in support of the Palestinians and denouncing the International Monetary Fund, thousands gathered in the Square. Police took into custody two persons who attempted to hold an illegal demonstration by handing out leaflets to people in Taksim square
The group which presented themselves as relatives of inmates carried banners written ''No To Isolation'' and ''PKK and KADEK'' on them and some others who were in HADEP group shouted slogans in Kurdish and supporting the head terrorist. This group was warned by the police.
Meanwhile, in the eastern city of Tunceli, authorities detained 20 people, including local officials of HADEP, for attempting to make an unauthorized public press statement to mark May Day.
In other provinces no negative incident took place.
