HIGH SCHOOLS TO BE FOUR YEARS
The first step has been taken to incrase compulsory education from eight years to 12 years. The high schools will be four years starting as of the next education year.
A total of 1.2 million students, who will start high school next year, will be educated for four years.
SUPREME COURT OF APPEALS: LAW WILL NOT INCLUDE KIRCI
Officials of Supreme Court of Appeals defended that it was impossible for Haluk Kirci, sentenced on charges of Bahcelievler massacre, to benefit from the Amnesty Law.
Officials said under the light of the conviction of Supreme Court of Appeals no:1 Criminal Office, those who were involved in killing, are given the chance of benefiting from the law only once. The officials recalled that this reduction was given to Kirci for once within the framework of law dated 1991.

MANY DIVORCES MADE DUE TO UNEMPLOYMENT
The Republican People's Party (CHP) which carries out a project named ''the unemployed is searching for a way out'' made a survey on 2,500 unemployed. According to the survey, umemployment hit harshly on the private lives of people. Around 480 of the 2,500 unemployed were separated from their families after losing their job. Around 42 percent of the unemployed were paid compensation while 23 percent of the unemployed were replaced by new employees.
TURKEY RANKED 122ND IN FOREIGN CAPITAL
Turkey was ranked the 122nd among 137 countries in the list of foreign capital inflow. State Minister Kemal Dervis, who responded to the question motion of Justice and Development Party (AK Party) deputy Mehmet Ali Shain, said that Turkey was ranked the 122nd among 137 countries according to the direct foreign investment index covering the years 1998 and 2000 made by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).

TASAR: I WILL NOT ALLOW BELLY DANCERS IN TURKISH NIGHTS
Tourism Minister Mustafa Tasar supported the view that ''belly dancers should be banned in Turkish nights.'' Tasar said, ''belly dancers don't reflect Turkish culture. I am not opposed to belly dancers, but I am against belly dancers under the name of Turkish night.''
TURKEY IS A SECURE COUNTRY
The American woman weight lifter Jacke Berube, who participated in World Weightlifting Championship held in southern Antalya province in November 2-11, said she did not hesitate to come to Turkey despite the warnings of her country for security reasons following September 11 terrorist attacks.
Berube, who spoke to daily New York Times, said her government had decided not to send the team to Turkey at those times for security reasons, but that she spent 4,000 U.S. dollars and hired two Turkish bodyguards, and that she attended the competitions under those conditions. Berube said she was not concerned over visiting Turkey.

SWEDEN WANTS PKK TO BE INCLUDED IN LIST OF TERRORISTS
Sweden wanted terrorist PKK to be included in the list of terrorists which European Union (EU) currently prepares, and which will be officially announced on May 2. Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh said, ''PKK's place is in the list of terrorists. We have earlier shown our reaction to PKK.''
TURK: PARLIAMENT TO TAKE UP AMNESTY LAW AGAIN
Justice Minister Hikmet Sami Turk, who spoke about President Ahmet Necdet Sezer's returning the new law re-arranging some articles of the law on conditional release from prison and suspension of punishments for crimes committed till April 23, 1999, to the Parliament to be debated again, said, ''President Sezer acted like the constitutional Court Chairman as he had worked as the Constitutional Court Chairman before.''
Turk claimed that President Sezer acted with the reaction of some newspapers and pointed out that a legal vacuum appeared with the return of the law. Turk said the law should be taken up in the Parliament again.

STARS ARE RED AND YELLOW
Millions of fans of Galatasaray soccer team, which became the champion of the Turkish SuperLeague of this year, rushed into streets. Galatasaray announced its championship one week before the end of the soccer season by beating Kocaelispor 2-0 in the Izmit Ismet Pasa Stadium on Sunday night. Hasan Sas scored one goal at the 45th second during the first half. The match was interrupted for almost 10 minutes due to incidents in the stands. Niculescu scored the second goal during the extra time. This goal made Galatasaray the champion of this year.

A total of 2.9 square metres of green field fell per person in Istanbul, which was getting more and more full of house, in 1975. Only 263 thousand square metres of playing fields are allocated for children today. There is a need for 13 million 869 thousand square metres of land for children while for 27 million square metres of sports fields.
BABY ACCUSATION TO DURMUS
Turkish Physicians' Union (TTB) reminded Health Minister Osman Durmus, who carried out a campagin against death of mothers and children, that the state was responsible for the death of 160 babies a day. The union asked Durmus why the state had done to better the adverse conditions.

America Muslims Association which Turkish people established in the United States was elected as Islam organization of the year and Hilmi Akdag, who is imam of New York Fatih Mosque, was chosen as imam of the year. Affinity Health Plan organization which was established only for humanitarian aid and which does not have a political view conducted the election. Affinity Health Plan chairman Maura Bluestone announced the results of the election at a meeting which was held at New York Plaza Hotel.

40 PRISONERS BENEFIT FROM AMNESTY BY TRANSFERRING TO CANAKKALE
Nearly 100 prisoners were released from Canakkale E type prison before President Ahmet Necdet Sezer returned the Amnesty Law to be debated in the Parliament again. Canakkale Prison Prosecutor Faruk Gulercan announced that 100 prisoners were released after the dossiers were examined in High Criminal Court by depending on the decision of Constitutional Court within last period of six months. He said that 40 prisoners transferred from several prisons to Canakkale prison after this implementation started.
GALATASARAY EDGES AHEAD FOR SUPER LEAGUE TITLE
Galatasaray won its 15th league championship cup on Sunday after a comfortable 2-0 win at Kocaelispor with just one week remaining in the Super League season. The win gave Galatasaray (75 points) a three-point lead over Fenerbahce (72), which scored a 1-0 away win over Bursaspor. Besiktas, the league's third Istanbul team, stands third with 62 points. Galatasaray fans in the club's red and yellow took to the streets in Istanbul as well as in the capital Ankara for a night of celebrations.
