Denktas Meets With Clerides

LEFKOSA (A.A) - 29.04.2002 - Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Rauf Denktas met on Monday with Greek Cypriot administration leader Glafcos Clerides.
Prior to the meeting, Denktas told reporters that they would present a collection of the issues brought onto the agenda during contacts with Clerides so far at their meeting.
Denktas said, ''we have collected all the issues debated so far in the light of the contacts as a non-paper and we will present it to Clerides. We hope they will respond to us.''
When reminded about the news stories in the Greek Cypriot press that some comprehensive proposals could be put forth in today's meeting, Denktas pointed out that the talks were continuously leaked out to the Greek Cypriot press and said that this news story was accurate.
Denktas noted that they would make a comprehensive explanation in the light of the proposals given to Greek Cypriots so far and by taking into consideration the responses of the Greek Cypriot administration and being flexible on some issues.
''We hope it will be beneficial, we hope some realities are accepted and our path will be shortened,'' Denktas said.
Upon another question, Denktas said that the Greek Cypriots would express their views and tell why they did not accept and which issues they did not accept.
Denktas noted that United Nations (U.N.) Secretary General's Special Envoy to Cyprus Alvaro De Soto, who was participating in the negotiations as an observer, would go to New York during the Easter of the Greek Cypriots.
The news stories in the Greek Cypriot press that the U.N. would present some proposals were speculative, Denktas said.
Denktas stated that the U.N. was in charge of helping the sides.
Asked what their reaction would be if U.N. made a proposal, Denktas said, ''it is meaningless to ask what our reaction will be because such a situation will not occur.''
Denktas underlined that considering June as a key point was wrong and said, ''I had said that what would happen could be shaped up till June. But, if it is not certain till June, we do not say that it is over. To this end, we will continue our talks as long as we have the opportunity to debate what the situation can be.''
Upon a question, Denktas said that nobody could say nothing to the discussion of Cyprus question by guarantors Turkey and Greece.
Denktas noted that there could be words that Greece and Greek Cypriot administration could tell when a new diagnosis was to put to the question.
Turkey had put a diagnosis to Cyprus question, Denktas said and noted that what was important was the diagnosis of the world.
Denktas said that Turkey's diagnosis was totally different and added that the question continued to this end.
