Ciller Proposes To Start Two-round Elections In Turkey

ANKARA (A.A) - 24.04.2002 - True Path Party (DYP) Chairman Tansu Ciller proposed to start a two-round election system in Turkey that would ''unite central right and central left and maintain political stability''.
Speaking at a parliamentary group meeting on Wednesday, Ciller said that the recent elections in France showed that no country would yield to certain marginal political movements.
''Certain marginal reflexes could sometimes gain power which is like a flicker of a candle, but a great nation like Turkey can never be left to such movements,'' she said. ''We should take a number of systematic measures to achieve this. We should preserve the ten percent threshold and we should bring together central right and central left and therefore maintain political stability. We should start two-round election system to accomplish this in Turkey.''
''Local and general elections should be held separately ,'' Ciller said, adding that this was the most realistic stability project for Turkey.
