WASHINGTON (A.A) - 19.04.2002 - World Bank President James Wolfensohn said on Friday that Turkey took extraordinarily good steps to improve its economy, adding that ''Turkey overcame the worst.''
Speaking in the annual spring term meetings of International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, Wolfensohn evaluated the recent economic situation in Turkey upon the question of A.A correspondent.
''Turkey took extraordinarily good steps to improve its economy, State Minister Kemal Dervis was able to persuade international institutions. In the last one week, IMF and World Bank approved to release over 2,3 billion dollars of loan to Turkey. I suppose Turkey overcome the worst,'' he said.
James Wolfensohn said that yet Turkey faced certain risks, adding that the Turkish economy has to start growing and the government has to continue supporting the programme. We also hope that Turkey should not be effected by the regional clashes. If Turkey continues to do what it has done so far its chance of becoming successful is high. This is the view of IMF and World Bank.''
Meanwhile State Minister Kemal Dervis who is in Washington D.C. for the spring term meetings, discussed the recent economic situation in Turkey with IMF Managing Director Horst Koehler.
