WASHINGTON (A.A) - 13.4.2002 - U.S. State Department's Cyprus Special Coordinator Weston has said that ''one of the sides'' has to act more flexible in Cyprus.
Speaking at a panel meeting held at Institute of Turkish Studies in Washington, D.C. on Friday, Weston said he didn't want to speak too much about the details since the talks were still continuing between Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) leader Rauf Denktas and Greek Cypriot leader Clerides.
He indicated that there was an inbalance in the talks and one of the sides doesn't act flexible enough about certain points that are extremely important to the other side.
Dr. Ian Lesser from the think-tank organization Rand who also spoke at the meeting said ''The clock is ticking and the time is running out. There is a chance for a solution and we shouldn't miss that.''
Greece and Greek Cypriot side claim that Cyprus would join the EU before the end of this year even though an agreement is not reached on the Cyprus conflict.
Dr. Birol Yesilada from Portland State University said the EU was complicating the Cyprus problem.
Dr. Benny Bartman from Prince Edward University in Canada said ''The TRNC is a state and its sovereignty should be recognized. Some of the countries which are members of the UN don't even have the qualities of a state as much as the TRNC.''
