ISMAIL-GEORGE SURPRIZE
Turkish and Greek foreign ministers decided to mediate to stop Israeli-Palestinian war. The surprize decision was originated as Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou called Foreign Minister Ismail Cem on the phone during his official visit to Beijing. Papandreou stressed that Turkey and Greece had vital interests in the Middle East. He said that Cem and he would show the world the role that two countries in competition could play in the solution of problems through dialogue. Cem said, ''Turkey has a view which is defined as 'concerted action.' This opinion is based on the fact that 'if we come together and pull our resources, we can ensure significant developments in the Middle East and enable two sides to sit at the same table.' Let's go there together. This seems to be the best thing. Launching of initiatives by two countries like Turkey and Greece, which had been enemies in the past, will also affect the sides.'' Papandreou said that Turkey had an influence on both of the sides and added that they should immediately go to the region after they contacted with the sides. Two ministers will probably go from Brussels to Israel next Tuesday.
HERE ARE TWO OF LETTERS
Hurriyet reached the letters sent to Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit by the Jewish lobbies in the United States due to the word ''genocide.'' Jewish lobbies expressed deep disappointment of Ecevit's words in both of the letters. The letters stressed fight of Israel against terrorism and drew the attention that this fight was similar to the fight of Turkey against the terrorist organization PKK.
ELECTRICITY SWITCHES DOWN FOR PALESTINE
''One minute darkness for continuous brightness'' campaign, which had earlier been carried out to draw attention to Susurluk case, was started in Turkey on Tuesday once more to support Palestine. The ''one minute darkness for brightness in Palestine'' campaign organized by Turkish Peace Initiators started as Palestinian Ambassador Fouad Yaseen in Ankara pulled down the electricty switch in building of Union of Graduates of School of Political Science. The campaign was also started in Jerusalem, Paris, Oslo and Sydney. Lights would be turned off at 9.00 p.m. every day and Israeli occupation of Palestine will be protested within the scope of the campaign.

ONLY CITIZENS MADE THE SAVING!
Only 2,000 of 89,000 cars which are used by the public sector and which were planned to be sold were handed over to Financial Ministry. Half of these 2,000 cars were completely worn-out. The government had promised to fight with purchasing of vehicles for the public sector and giving flats to public officials, but it could not keep its word. According to the reports which Finance Minister Sumer Oral sent to the parliament, the flats which were given to public employees were not sold and new ones were purchased.
''ISMAIL LET'S GO TO PALESTINE''
Foreign Minister Ismail Cem and his Greek counterpart George Papandreou plan to go to Israil together on April 16. Diplomatic sources said that Papandreou who phoned Ismail Cem following his visit to Egypt last week, gave information about his contacts in Egypt and proposed Cem to go to Israel together. Cem accepted Papandreou's proposal on condition of meeting with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. The two ministers also informed Israel about their plan.

150,000 TURKS ARE DOLLAR MILLIONAIRE
Sabah writer Metin Munir said that the number of dollar millionaires in Turkey increased despite the economic crisis in the country in 1994. For a long time, U.S. dollar brought an interest rate of 25 percent. Even if the interest rates for U.S. dollars are not much, it is still high in respect of TL basis. ''For those who have great amount of U.S. dollars, Turkey is a paradise, because he/she can earn quite a lot money if he/she exchanges money into TL, or buy Treasury bond,'' Munir stated.
GETTING VISA FROM U.S. BECOMES MORE DIFFICULT
The U.S. which is still suffering from the consequences of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, had made difficult the conditions of giving visas. The period that was given to businessmen and tourists which is six months has been decreased to 30 days. The visas given for ''visitors'' won't be turned into ''student'' visas from now on. People will make their visas approved beforehand for taking courses in the U.S.

HEADSCARF ALLIANCE
Rightist parties which could not digest the 8-year compulsory education ensured the opening of an investigation about National Education Minister Metin Bostancioglu. The motion presented by the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) against Bostancioglu was adopted with 230 votes in favour to 209 against votes. More than 80 deputies of the ruling parties supported the motion of the opposition. Turhan Alcelik of Felicity Party (SP) revealed the real target of their investigation demand by his word ''those who supported the decisions that banned Koran courses will pay the price.'' Some deputies accused the minister of ''declaring war against holy things of people.'' Bostancioglu stressed that all allegations were baseless and noted that he would not resign. Bostancioglu said that he did not divert from the path illuminated by science and wisdom. Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit said, ''what is important is the services that Bostancioglu has given so far and will give from now on.''
DENKTAS PRESENTS A SOLUTION PLAN
Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Rauf Denktas brought into agenda new openings although they are limited and some proposals covering different and new elements than the ''confederation thesis.'' Denktas proposed Greek Cypriot administration leader Glafcos Clerides to found a ''Cyprus Partnership State'' on the basis of ''equal status.'' The current political structure will be ended and a partnership structure will be settled for ''common interests.'' Some authorities of the states will be transferred to central authority while the two states will deal with their ''security and law'' by themselves. The partnership state will have a single legal identity in international arena. After a solution, European Union (EU) membership of the island as a whole will come to the agenda. The number of soldiers to be deployed on the island will be updated under an Alliance Agreement.

BAYAR TO BE DISMISSED
State Minister Yilmaz Karakoyunlu who is in charge of privatization submitted the decree he prepared to dismiss Ugur Bayar, the Chairman of Privatization Board, to the government. Karakoyunlu also took the views of Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit and Deputy Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz before preparing the decree. Karakoyunlu probably decided to dismiss Bayar as Bayar didn't give correct information to the Board about the firm Turkish Airlines (THY) decided to found to carry out the services in the airport.
YILMAZ:HARMONY WITH EU TO SOLVE ECONOMIC CRISIS
State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz said that the inflow of foreign capital into Turkey will have a vital importance in the coming period, adding that ''this shows that overcoming the economic crisis is only possible by speeding up the harmony process with the EU.'' Speaking in the opening of the panel discussion on ''Effects of EU Membership on Turkish Economy and Business World,'' Yýlmaz said that if Turkey starts to negotiate with EU till the end of 2002, a significant amount of foreign capital will start to flow into Turkey.

''PALESTINE AND TERRORIST ORGANIZATION PKK ARE NOT THE SAME''
The government reacted to the comparison made by Jewish lobby in the United States between Israeli operation on Palestine and Turkey's fight against terrorist organization PKK in the letter sent to Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit. State Minister Ramazan Mirzaoglu said that ''considering the terrorist organization PKK and Palestinian State as similar was very wrong.'' Prior to the group meeting of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), Mirzaoglu said, ''Palestine is a state recognized by Turkey and many other countries. It is very wrong to consider a terrorist organization and Palestine and Arafat as the same.'' Mirzaoglu noted that war and violence would not help anybody and added, 'there is really a serious attack on Palestinian people. And Arafat is kept under siege. This is an unacceptable situation.''
''YOU WILL BE HURT''
State Minister Kemal Dervis, who addressed the businessmen, called them to refrain from making speculative movements related with the currency. Dervis said, ''do not give up the floating exchange rate regime. Otherwise, you will be hurt. I will not recommend you this. Also, do not get indebted by trusting the currency.''

SECRET BALLOT HITS COALITION HARMONY FOR SECOND TIME
The parliamentary investigation motion which was submitted to the parliament about National Education Minister Metin Bostancioglu was adopted yesterday. A total of 230 deputies cast votes in favour of the motion, while 209 deputies voted against the motion. A total of 77 deputies didn't attend the voting. Certain deputies from the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and Motherland Party (ANAP) didn't support Bostancioglu in the secret ballot. Earlier, the motion against MHP minister Koray Aydin was accepted in a secret ballot. This has been the second shadow over the coalition harmony. A parliamentary commission will be set up to investigate the claims brought against Bostancioglu who was accused of favouritism and ideological policies in the National Education Ministry.
