ISTANBUL (A.A) - 05.04.2002 - World Bank issued a report on effects of the economic crisis on the real sector and said that nearly 2.3 million people (10.6 percent of total employment) became unemployed as of end of 2001.
The bank revised its report on the effects of economic crisis on enterprises in first half of 2001 and updated it with the headline ''evaluation of effects of economic crisis on real sector''.
The report said that although companies in Turkey rapidly adapted themselves to the crisis environment, the situation is very serious for the enterprises and workers.
It said that nearly 2.3 million people (10.6 percent of total employment) became unemployed as of end of 2001.
The report stressed that in February 2001, Turkey had experienced the deepest economic and financial crisis since the World War II and there had been sharp decreases in its commercial-industrial activities.
Noting that the negative effects of the crisis had started in the public sector and later spread to finance sector, deeply affecting all enterprises and felt by whole economy, the report said, ''in order to resettle economic growth and increase profitability of companies, Turkey should immediately implement a comprehensive institutional restructuring programme. Besides, synchronous solutions should be prepared when difficult conditions suffered by companies start to affect finance organizations.''
