NEW YORK (A.A) - 04.04.2002 - The U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan's Special Envoy to Cyprus Alvaro de Soto will give briefing the U.N. Security Council regarding the second round of talks held between Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Rauf Denktas and Greek Cypriot leader Glafcos Clerides.
De Soto had visited Ankara and Athens before coming to New York, and had held contacts with the Turkish and Greek foreign ministry officials.
Meanwhile, representatives of five permanent members of the Security Council, the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China had a meeting on Wednesday about Cyprus. Outlines of the press statement which the Security Council would make following De Soto's briefing, were determined.
De Soto attends the talks on the island in observer status, and conveys the information which he obtains from the negotiations to Secretary General Annan and Security Council members.
De Soto is expected to return the island after briefing the council, and the third round of talks between Denktas and Clerides is expected to resume on April 9. This round will probably continue till the end of April, and the talks will be recessed for five days at the end of the month due to the Easter holiday of the Orthodox people.
Diplomatic sources told A.A correspondent that they expected the sides to discuss the issues in detail in the third round of face to face talks. Territory percentages, authorities that would be transferred to central government, sovereignty, and return of refugees are among the main issues which Denktas and Clerides discuss.
The sources said Greek Cypriots proposed 24 percent territory during the second round of talks.
The TRNC officials said such a proposal could not be accepted, and recalled that the Greek Cypriots wanted the refugees to be allowed to retun to their houses, and that the TRNC proposed global exchange of property.
