FIRST TURKISH BLOODSHED IN WEST BANK
Bullets targeted international observers in West Bank. Turkish blood was shed yesterday in West Bank which becomes the scene of intense clashes between Israel and Palestine. Assailants stopped the car of international observers and rained bullets on it. Unarmed 39-year-old international observer Turkish officer Major Cengiz Toytunc and Catherine Burns, a woman observer from Switzerland, were killed and another Turkish officer Captain Huseyin Ozaslan was wounded in the armed attack. The Foreign Ministry contacted with the Israeli and Palestinian sides and asked them to open investigations. A military plane will depart for Israel today to bring in the body of the Turkish officer. The attack in Hebron city of West Bank created question marks. While Palestine and Israel are accusing each other, it is said that anti-peace opposition groups in both societies could have staged the attack.

''MARKET IS RELIEVED IF YOU WON'T INCREASE PRICES FOR 3 MONTHS''
Household Consumption Panel (HTP) Research and Counselling Board made a call to producers: ''Don't increase the prices for three months. Economy will start to grow and the inflation will stop.'' HTP Chairman Guntac Ozler said that the opportunity which had been found last year with the special deduction campaigns was missed due to early taxes.

SCHUMACHER TO COME TO TURKEY
Reigning champion driver of Formula-1 Michael Schumacher of Germany will come to Turkey and play in the advertisement of new Palio car produced by Tofas in Bursa.

WORLD BANK LOAN READY IN APRIL
Treasury Undersecretariat said that the works on obtaining 1.35 billion U.S. dollars loan from the World Bank to support the finance and public sectors had been completed. The loan agreements will be signed by the Turkish government and World Bank officials following the discussion and approval of the loan in question by the World Bank Board in April. The Second Programme Finance and Public Sector Adjustment Loan (PFPSAL-II) will be given to Turkey in three tranches each of which would be 450 million U.S. dollars and that the first tranche will be released shortly after approval of the loan.

''CHANGE IN PKK'S NAME DOES NOT MEAN ANYTHING''
Chief of General Staff General Huseyin Kivrikoglu who attended a dinner hosted by President Ahmet Necdet Sezer in honor of Macedonian President Boris Traykovski answered a question which said, ''what do you think about change of PKK's name as 'People's Freedom Party'?'' by stating, ''everything is clear. Does a change of name mean anything while everything is clear? Those who give advices to PKK should keep those advices to themselves.''

PKK CARRIES ITS MONEY TO IRAN
It was revealed that PKK is trying to carry its money worth nearly 20 million U.S. dollars which is claimed to be kept in Syria, to Iran via Northern Iraq. In a news in the NTVMSNBC news portal's web-page, the intelligence units were quoted as saying that PKK had brought 1.4 million U.S. dollars in cash from Syria to Iran via Northern Iraq on March 24.

TURKISH BUSINESSMAN CANDIDATE FOR U.S. CONGRESS ELECTIONS
Turkish businessman Osman R. Bengur became a candidate of the Democrat Party from Maryland State for the congress elections in the United States on November 5. If he is elected, Bengur will be the first Turkish congressman in the American history.

IZGI TO QUIT POLITICS
Parliament Speaker Omer Izgi announced that he would quit politics in the end of this period. Politics necessitated energy, Izgi said and added, ''now, I want to write about my experiences in politics. We have to allow young generation to enter politics. I will retire and raise chicken.''

ANTALIS IN TURKISH MARKET
Antalis, giant paper marketing company in Europe, became a partner of Turkish Simge Kagit company. Simge Kagit's Executive Board Chairman Ibrahim Sisman stressed importance of partnership agreement by saying, ''as a result of the know-how support of the Antalis, we target to offer services of high quality.''

''EU IS TURKEY'S REAL FAMILY''
Mark Parris, former U.S. Ambassador to Turkey, said, ''for Turkey, the United States is not the alternative of the European Union. You can choose your friends but you can't choose your family. There have always been good relations between Turkey and the United States and this will continue. However, Turkey is a part of Europe. Europe is very important for Turkey.''

SWEDISH PARLIAMENT: ARMENIAN GENOCIDE DID NOT OCCUR
Swedish parliament announced that it made a mistake regarding Armenian genocide which it had recognized by depending on the United Nations (U.N.) resolutions in 2000 and noted that the U.N. had never taken such a decision. Swedish parliament said that they could not take decisions related with so-called Armenian, Syriac and Keldani genocide which were claimed to be made before 1948 and stated that historians should rather deal with such allegations.

LOCAL STATE CLOSING DOWN
The government which has directed towards a firm savings policy is getting prepared to close regional directorates under ministries, general directorates and administrations. The government aims to sell buildings and houses allocated for the personnel of these regional directorates.

YILMAZ REFUSES HEADSCARF
The initiative of the Motherland Party (ANAP) to ''allow headscarf in faculties and high schools of theology rejected by Mesut Yilmaz.'' Yilmaz prevented preparations of group acting leader Beyhan Aslan for a draft law to free headscarf at the Chairmanship Council during which a decision was taken to warn the governors who led to Nevruz and headscarf tensions. Yilmaz, who called Beyhan after he heard about the declarations, said, ''this proposal will escalate tension in the coalition. Even if the law is passed, the Constitutional Court will annul it.'' Yilmaz cancelled his tour to Cuba due to parliamentary works and works on European Union.

GIANT SUCCESS OF THY
Turkish Airlines (THY) recorded a net profit of 8 trillion Turkish liras (TL) in 2001, which was a ''year of crisis'' in which even giant aviation companies like Sabena and Swissair went bankrupt. According to a statement sent to the stock exchange, the profit of THY exceeded 8 trillion TL last year although it was suffering 69 trillion TL loss in 2000.

HYPOCRITICAL EU: PKK IS A TERRORIST ORGANIZATION
Ther European Union which earlier considered the separatist terrorist organization PKK ''legal'', forgot the terrorist organization's new name and declared the old name as ''terrorist'' when the PKK changed its name from PKK to PAG. The EU that tried to clear itself of responsibility, also said American giant cigarette firms were working with the PKK and financing the terrorist organization by cigarette smuggling.

KITCHEN IS BURNING
Turk-Is Research Center said in a statement that when the economic crisis is continuing in the kitchen, ''kitchen inflation'' became 67.2 percent annually and the poverty level was calculated as 967 million Turkish liras. According to the written statement of Turk-Is, the problems in the family budget which were resulted from the developments in the economy also continued in March.

COUNCIL OF STATE: CRITICISMS ARE VERY EMBARRASSING
Council of State reacted to the criticisms in some newspapers related to annulling the permission of the investigation against Justice and Development Party (AK Party) leader and former Istanbul mayor Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Istanbul Mayor Ali Mufit Gurtuna. Council of State said in a statement that Council of State Department no:2's decision which annulled the permission for investigation against Erdogan and Gurtuna was taken with the implementation of the laws and the decisions of Constitutional Court.
