HISTORICAL STEP WITH GREECE
Turkey and Greece will sign a joint project of 300 million U.S. dollars this week. Greek Development Minister Apostolos-Athanasios Tsokhatzopoulos will come to Turkey March 28. During his contacts in Ankara, Ankara-Dedeagac natural gas pipeline project will be given its last shape. Underlining the importance of the project, Tsohatzopoulos said, ''we will transport Caspian and Eurasian natural gas to the European Union (EU) via Turkey and Greece. Both BOTAS and DEPA has been working to put into practice this project for three years.''

STRAW: ''TURKEY DELAYS TAKING OVER COMMAND OF ISAF''
British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said that they would extend Britain's role as a ''lead authority'' in the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan for a little while. When asked if Turkey would eventually take over command of ISAF, Straw said, ''they are anxious to do it if the conditions are right. If you are asking me, would I put money on them doing it, yes I would. Am I absolutely certain they will until they have...signed on the dotted line? No.''

NUMBER OF MOTOR VEHICLES INCREASES
Number of motor vehicles which was 647 thousand 947 in 1974, increased up to 7 million 347 thousand in 2002. According to data of the State Institute of Statistics, number of automobiles which was 313 thousand 160 in 1974, rose to 4 million 537 thousand 612 in 2002.

OECD: ''TURKISH ECONOMY STARTS TO RECOVER''
Alexandra Bibbee, the Turkey Desk Chief of Economic Cooperation and Development Organization (OECD), said that the developments in the financial market conditions were the first signs of the recovery of the Turkish economy. Bibbee said that they would discuss their estimations about the economy of Turkey for 2002 with member countries soon. Noting that if the measures foreseen in the economic programme backed by IMF were implemented as they were planned, the economic revival would come out, Bibbee said that Turkey needs some patience and time.

SENATOR MCCAIN: ''YOU SHOULD PRERARE YOUR LIST''
U.S. Senator John McCain addressed on March 20 a group of Turkish and American businessmen, and said that U.S. President George W. Bush would call Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit on the phone sooner or later about the issue of Iraq. He said that Turkey should prepare its list of demands, and added that the U.S. Congress could not reject them. Giving the example of Pakistan, McCain said General Musharraf had put forward a series of demands, and reached all of them. He said that success of a possible military operation against Iraq depended on Turkey's support.

SUMMER TIME IMPLEMENTATION TO START ON MARCH 31
Summer time implementation will start on March 31, 2002. It aims at saving energy, providing harmony with European countries, and decreasing energy demand that increases to the maximum level at night. Summer time implementation will end on October 27, 2002. Nearly 5 billion 73.6 million kilowatt-hour (kwh) of energy has been saved since 1990 within the framework of the summer time implementation. Nearly 650 million kwh of energy is expected to be saved in this year's implementation.

THERE MAY BE TEMPORARY REDUCTION IN VAT
State Minister Tunca Toskay said, ''we can not jeopardize primary surplus but some micro solutions are necessary.'' Toskay said there might be periodical reduction of tax in some areas.
Toskay said it would be better to consider the results of Value Added Tax (VAT) reduction in automobile and durable household last year.

SLOGAN IS READY IF IRAQ IS HIT
Turkey expects 13 million tourists and 10 billion U.S. dollars income from tourism this year. Tourism Minister Mustafa Tasar said, ''there is only one slogan this year: ''catch Turkey's rhythm.''
''However, we got lesson from September 11 terrorist attacks. We have developed alternative against every probability. For example, if the United States hits Iraq, we will change the slogan and underline that we are a Mediterranean country,'' Tasar said.

CONFESSION OF MINISTER
Husnu Yusuf Gokalp, the minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, said Turkey, which was earlier shown as a self-sufficient country in the field of agriculture, began to import agricultural products today. Gokalp said, ''Turkey became the poor guard of rich resources.''

STORM AND HEAVY RAIN TO CONTINUE
Damage assessment works started to determine the loss caused by storm and heavy rain in Antalya and Karaman provinces.
Officials of directorate of meteorology said storm and heavy rain would continue for a few days more.
The heavy rain and storm, which paralyzed daily life in southern Antalya province the previous day decreased its effect. More than a thousand houses and business places were inundated.

RADIKAL (LEFT)

FINAL DECISION IN KURDISH
National Security Council (NSC) will give its final decision about broadcast in Kurdish language on Friday. The Motherland Party (ANAP) says state run Turkish Radio and Television (TRT) should make the broadcast, whereas the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) says it could not take place through the state.

GOOD NEWS TO HANDICAPPED
The draft law, which the handicapped waited for long years, is taken within the scope of ''principle law'' after all the parties confirmed.
Parliamentary General Commission this week will discuss the draft which will bring very important facilities to the lives of handicapped.
Under the draft law, the buildings will be constructed by thinking of the handicapped. Special arrangements would be made for the handicapped in tranportation vehicles. National Rehabilitation Center will be set up. Reduction will be made in cultural and sports activities.

TOBB TO BE BRIDGE WITH EU
Rifat Hisarcýklýoglu, the Chairman of the Union of Turkish Chambers of Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB) promoted Turkish Chambers Development Programme which is supported by MEDA funds of the European Union (EU). Hisarciklioglu said that TOBB would start to implement Turkish Chambers Development Programme in cooperation with Eurochambers to increase the productivity of the Turkish chambers. Holding a news conference in Ankara, Hisarcýklýoglu gave information about the programme. Hisarcýklýoglu said that the programme will be carried out with the source of one million Euro that was provided from MEDA funds, adding that the programme aims to set up ties between the Turkish and EU chambers and to support the efforts of the Turkish chambers to implement new projects.

EXPORT TOWARDS BOTTOM
The export from Turkey to the European Union (EU) countries decreased by 2.6 percent to 2 billion 468 million U.S. dollars in the first two months of 2002. The export to the United States also decreased by 6 percent to 458 million U.S. dollars. In the first two months of this year, Turkey's export reduced by 1.5 percent from 4 billion 854 million U.S. dollars to 4 billion 783 million U.S. dollars.

242 BANKS ROBBED DURING LAST 2 YEARS
According to the data of Police General Directorate Public Order Department, the banks are robbed by the qualified robbers. A total of 242 banks have been robbed since 2000. 123 of them remained as uncovered. Security officials said that there had been an increase in the number of the robberies since 2000. A total of 160 bank were robbed in 2000 and 79 of them remained uncovered. 75 banks were robbed in 2001 and 43 of them could not be unlightened. In January 2002, four banks have been robbed and one of them remained uncovered.
