LEFKOSA, March 21 (A.A) - President Rauf Denktas of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) said on Thursday that the Turkish Cypriots who had a founder partner status in the ''Cyprus Republic'' established in 1960 on basis of Turkish-Greek Cypriot partnership, cannot accept a ''status lower than this status'' in the new partnership and that acceptance of a ''lower status'' brings up a disaster.
Speaking at a meeting at which he received Idealist Associations delegation, Denktas said that difficulties in the Cyprus talks continued but they would continue the talks with patience and good will. Denktas said that they were expending efforts to make a lasting agreement which would not allow return to period between 1963-1974.
The Idealist Associations delegation presented a document to Denktas and requested that any concession from the TRNC should not be given, Turkey's guarantorship right should not be ignored, citizenship right of people who had come to the TRNC after 1974 and become citizens of the TRNC should be discussed and any territory concession should not be made during the ongoing face-to-face talks.
Denktas said that the principles mentioned by the Idealist Associations were the principles which should be protected and that mutual respect and protection of existing rights were the conditions.
Stressing that they would not make an agreement which would close the doors to people who wanted to return to the country and discriminate some TRNC citizens, Denktas said, ''so nobody should feel concern.''
Noting that he started to have doubts about the European Union (EU) representatives due to the issue related to EU Representative in Turkey Karen Fogg, Denktas said, ''here a newspaper made a public survey and the result is that 90 percent of people want to enter the EU. However, it brought another result, that is, on the condition of 'together with Turkey after the agreement'. It is a good result. The representative here took it and prepared a report saying, '90 percent of Turkish Cypriots want the EU. Noone listens to Denktas so you too should not listen to him.' And the EU makes assesment on this lie. So I suppose that everybody has understood that a result can't be reached with wrong reports.''
Noting that the honor of the EU representation had been destroyed with the improper and rude things made by Fogg, Denktas said, ''we hope that from now on they will tell their representatives, 'be careful about the people in the places you are going to and make diplomacy instead of espionage', increasing our confidence. Otherwise, we are obliged to think why a side which attempted to play such games tried to do such things.''
Denktas said that but the people became aware and that every name mentioned in Fogg's list should be considered ''spy of Fogg''.
