FOGG: ''OUR DUTY IS TO ASSIST TURKEY''
European Union (EU) Commission Representative Karen Fogg said that their duty was to assist Turkey in understanding the EU and in recording progress within framework of the Accession Strategy. A symposium was organized in Istanbul's Armada Hotel within framework of the project ''Freedom of Expression in Turkey with its Legal and Social Aspects'' carried out in cooperation between the Liberal Thought Group and the EU Commission. Speaking at the symposium, Fogg said that the project was one of the initiatives launched by several non-governmental organizations in Turkey that have been given financial support by the EU Commission in order to strengthen democracy and civil society.

IZGI: ''THE ONLY ALTERNATIVE IS TURKEY ITSELF''
Parliament Speaker Omer Izgi said, ''the only alternative against the European Union (EU) is Turkey itself. If the EU continues to put forward more obstacles in front of Turkey's full membership, Turkey will have the opportunity to unite with other forces.''

YILMAZ: ''OUR WOMEN WILL LEAD US TO EU''
State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz, the leader of the Motherland Party (ANAP), said, ''problems of women, in fact, depends on democracy. Our women will lead us to the European Union (EU) membership.''

SEPTEMBER 11 EXHIBITION OPENED IN ISTANBUL
Joel Meyerowitz entered wreckage of the twin towers of the World Trade Center complex in New York 12 days later the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, and took photographs. These photographs are being displayed in an exhibition opened in Istanbul's Topkapi Palace.

Ediz Hun whose son was sentenced to 10 month in prison on charges of using illicit drug, said, ''illicit drug trafficking networks deceive young people. These networks should be given more punishment.''

FANTINI: ''AN ORGANIZATION WAS FOUNDED TO DESTROY TURKISH CYPRIOTS''
In an articled titled ''Bitter Fact'' published in the Fileleftheros, Greek Cypriot journalist Andreas Fantini confessed, ''on those days, Greek Cypriots aimed at destroying rights of Turkish Cypriots. The National Organization was founded under the leadership of Interior Minister Yorgacis in order to put into practice the 'Acribas' plan. Members of the organization were equipped with weapons brought in from Greece. They received military training.''

CEM: ''BOTH ISRAEL AND PALESTINE ARE COMMITTING SUICIDE''
Foreign Minister Ismail Cem said, ''The Middle East has turned into a war field as a result of clashes between Israelis and Palestinians. Recent developments in the Middle East have been threatening peace and stability in the region. Latest incidents appear to be a joint suicide committed by Israeli and Palestinian peoples. The most important thing is to resume negotiations immediately and without any preconditions. Both sides should put an end to acts of violence as soon as possible. Palestine should do its utmost to isolate and judge the elements of violence within itself. Meanwhile, Israel should put an end to use of extreme force and to its actions resulted in killing of innocent people.''

DICK CHENEY DUE IN TURKEY
U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney will pay a visit to Turkey within framework of his tour to Middle East and Britain. Cheney's contacts in Turkey are expected to focus on the issue of Iraq. U.S. administration underlines that Turkey has been constituting a model in the Islam world with its secular and democratic regime. The issue of Afghanistan will also be brought onto agenda during Cheney's contacts in Turkey.

IS CHILD PORNOGRAPHY A CRIME?
Ozgen Imamoglu, a teacher, was sentenced to pay a fine of 1 billion 875 million Turkish lira on charges of making trade of child pornography. In western countries, such an offender is sentenced to long years in prison. The parliament has not approved the United Nations Convention to Prevent Child Pornography for 18 months.

DEATH FASTER DIES
Yusuf Kutlu who had been fasting to death for 285 days to protest F-type prisons, died at Ankara's Numune Hospital. Kutlu, 27, became the 48th person to die in more than a year of hunger strike protests. Kutlu had been sentenced to 12 years and 6 months in prison on charges of being a member of the illegal Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C).

State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz, the leader of the Motherland Party (ANAP), said, ''the European Union (EU) is the future of Turkey. I believe that the Turkish Armed Forces is also in favor of the EU full membership. The EU membership is not an artificial agenda. No one has the right to sabotage a project supported by two thirds of our nation.''

CSIS: ''NO DATE''
Washington D.C.-based Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) said in its report about Turkey that the United States had been supporting Turkey's European Union (EU) full membership. The report noted, ''the EU, however, will not set a date for beginning of full membership negotiations with Turkey in 2002.''

BAHCELI: ''A REFERENDUM FOR EU MEMBERSHIP WILL BE A STEP BACK''
State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Devlet Bahceli, the leader of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), reacted to proposal of State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz, the leader of the Motherland Party (ANAP), to hold a referendum for the European Union (EU) membership. Stressing that Turkey had been expending great efforts to become a full member of the EU for 40 years, Bahceli said that a referendum for the EU membership would be a step back.
