Eight Turks In U.S. Still Under Custody

WASHINGTON D.C., March 8 (A.A) - A total of eight Turks are still under custody after the Sept. 11 attacks in the U.S.
Undersecretary and Spokesman of Turkish Embassy in Washington D.C. Mehmet Ali Bayar told A.A on Friday that 69 Turks were taken into custody as they were accused of violating visa and immigrant laws in the U.S. after Sept. 11 attacks and that the number was eight today.
''The U.S. officials speeded up the trial process due to our initiatives and after the visit of Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit to the U.S. None of the 69 Turks were kept in custody due to terrorism charges. Only eight of them are in custody now.'' Bayar said that four of these eight Turks are in New York, two of them are in New Jersey, one of them is in Connecticut and one of them is in Delaware. Bayar said that three of the 69 Turks acquitted, majority of the others returned to Turkey due to the decision of deportation and few of them objected to the court decision.
Bayar added that Turkish Consulate General in New York continues to launch efforts for these persons, adding that Turkish and American officials are in full cooperation in this issue.
