Denktas: We Are Not Against Settlement Of Greek Cypriots In T.R.N.C.

LEFKOSA, March 7 (A.A) - Rauf Denktas, the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) said on Friday that they were not against settlement of Greek Cypriots in TRNC, noting that this would be tied to a quota in time. He said that was a measure for the security of the Turkish Cyprots and to prevent them from falling into the position of minority again.
Denktas responded to the questions of reporters following his meeting with Glafcos Clerides, the leader of the Greek Cypriot side.
When asked what would be discussed during his meeting with EU Commissioner Guenter Verheugen, Denktas said, ''none of us will respond negatively in case there is an effective institution, basing on two founder states and jointly representing the two sides, in entrance to the EU. When I earlier asked him, he said they wanted an effective institution which would negotiate with us in EU affairs. Now that we are doing this. This is our biggest opening against the Greek Cypriots. Restrictions are necessary on some issues, like the restriction of three freedoms. We will listen to his views in this respect.'
Pointing out that there were difficulties, Denktas said the difficulty stemmed from the attitude of the Greek Cypriots rejecting the things wanted by the Turkish Cypriots saying those were obstacles in entering to the EU.
When asked if three freedoms would be lifted in a specific period of time, Denktas said they wanted solid bases.
Denktas said this was a measure for security and to prevent Turkish Cypriots to fall into the position of minority again, and that this was implemented in some countries.
