INFLATION ENTERS TO DOWNWARD TREND
Positive developments in economic indications began to become clear. According to the figures announced on Sunday, inflation showed its smallest increase following the crisis in February.
State Statistics Institute (DIE) announced on Sunday that the wholesale prices increased by 2.6 percent and the consumer prices increased by 1.8 percent in February, 2002 when compared to January, 2002.
The annual inflation in February has been 91.8 percent in wholesale prices and 73.1 percent in consumer prices.

TURKEY IN NATIONAL JOURNAL
The American National Journal Magazine put ''Secular-democratic Islam country Turkey'' on its front page and allocated seven pages to Turkey in its edition, where it praised Turkey.
The magazine showed Turkey as alternative against the Islam theocracy which Iran and Saudi Arabia wanted to promote, and said Turkey's experience could determine whether or not clash between the civilizations, the secular-democratic West and Moslem East, would be left in the past.

ANKARA! IS THERE ANYBODY HEARING MY VOICE?
Prof. Naci Gorur reacts to the indifference of Ankara on quake. Gorur said, ''we have examined Marmara with foreign ships and by using very high technology. We have sent all the reports to the ministries, universities and the army. Nobody called us and asked what could be done.''
Prof, Gorur said the latest quake in Istanbul was a warning, but that Ankara remained indifferent to the issue.

SILENT REVOLUTION
Tranquility and confidence prevail in Bayrampasa Prison now, where weapon and heroin had entered easily in the past.
Turkey's biggest prison had been called as ''Texas'' for years. A handful of prisoners had the control. There was bloodshed in the prison and the prisoners collected money illegally.
A plan was carried out silently to put an end to this. First of all, a change was made in administration of the prison. Bahtisan Er became the first university graduate prison director.
Later, others followed, the prosecutor Metin Senturk, and major Mustafa Dogan. Now, the prisoners attend in theather games and read books. Chief Prosecutor Citici conveyed the message to the relatives of prisoners that ''Don't worry anymore, the danger is over.''

STREET FIGHTING FOR THREE MILLION LIRA
A curfew was declared on Sunday evening in Esenler district when the incidents, which turned the district into battle field, could not be controlled. Police raided the houses following the killing of one person.
It was later determined that the incidents started because of three million lira which one person owed to the other.

SP LEADER KUTAN: ''IRAQ AND TURKEY CANNOT BE IN WAR WITH EACH OTHER
Felicity Party (SP) Chairman Recai Kutan said that Turkey and Iraq cannot be in war with each other.
When he was responding to questions upon coming to SP headquarters, Kutan was reminded that the United States instructed some of its personnel in Turkey to send home their wives and children. Kutan said he heard this for the first time and added that Turkey was a perfectly safe country. ''I don't think this news is true,'' he commented.
''Our nation is completely against having any link with the U.S. operation against Iraq. Therefore, such a thing is out of question. As the SP, we have said that such an adventure would be very very wrong and contradict with our national interests. This is not only our view. At least 90 percent of our nation agrees with us,'' Kutan said.

PUK LEADER TALABANI TO COME TO TURKEY THIS EVENING
Jalal Talabani, the leader of the Patriotic Union for Kurdistan (PUK) will come to Ankara on March 4. Talabani will meet with Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Ugur Ziyal during his visit.
Foreign Ministry accepted the demand of Talabani who wanted to come to Turkey prior to the Iraqi opposition leaders' meeting expected to be held in Washington D.C. in March.
Turkey which will get the views of Talabani about the recent developments in the region, will convey its security concerns to Talabani.

PIRI REIS SHALL NOT HEAR
The state, which cannot employ staff to be in conformity with the agreement with IMF, sent a bank manager to work in the ship. A total of four crewmen left last year the only research ship of Turkey, Piri Reis, having the international standards. Dokuz Eylul University applied to the concerned units of the state that a captain should be appointed to the ship. The state sent a manager of a public bank, which was closed, as the captain to the ship. Marine Sciences Institute Director Prof. Ergun said that the person which was sent by the state could have some benefits to the ship, but they needed a captain firstly.

PURSE-SNATCHING TO PRESS FREEDOM
The government has the intention not to pass the new draft press law which was prepared to adjust with the EU by putting forth a pretext ''there was no time'', but content with a make-up only for show.
The new 35-article press law draft prepared by State Minister Yilmaz Karakoyunlu would have been replaced with existing law which was changed dramatically after September 12 because there was a promise given to the EU for broadening the freedom of thought and expression, and this promise should have been kept until March 19. But the discussions of death penalty had intensified.

MARTIAL LAW IN ESENLER
The quarrel which started in Esenler district of Istanbul between the two people in the previous day turned into street clashes on Sunday. Police intervened in the clashes with tear gas. Two persons who were wounded in the fighting that broke out in Sakarya street between the two groups which used stones, fire-bombs and clubs, were hospitalized. One of the injured died on Sunday. A curfew was declared at the district tonight.

TURKISH AND ARMENIAN WOMEN TO CONVENE IN YEREVAN
Turkish and Armenian women would convene in Armenian capital Yerevan aiming to improve bilateral relations and to contribute to the works that have been exerted.
The 15-people group, comprised of women journalists, parliamentarians and academicians, will meet Hermeni Maghdalyan from Armenian Parliament on March 8, the World Women's Day, and Hranus Khanadyan, the Armenian Women Associations Representative.
The project, carried out by Turkish-Armenian Business Development Council and the Marmara Foundation, was sponsored by California University.
The visit will take place in March 8-12.

TURKEY EXPORTS AUTOMOBILE WORTH OF 567 MILLION IN TWO MONTHS
The shrinkage, which the automotive sector experienced in domestice market, partially reflected in exportation.
A decrease was recorded in exportation made in the first two months of the year. The exportation became 567 million U.S. dollars.
The automotive sector, which made exportation worth of 305 million U.S. dollars, in February, had made exportation worth of 318 million U.S. dollars last year in February.
