IMAM TEAM CAPTURED
One Palestinian and two Jordanian members of the Beyyiat El Imam Organization (Union of Imams) and seven Turks who helped them were caught in an operation in Van by the careful investigation of a policeman. The police followed the three suspects due to the false passports they provided from Turkey. The three suspects were planning suicide bomb attacks in Israel. A high ranking security official told the paper that ''these three persons entered Turkey months ago and went to Afghanistan with the passports their supporters in Istanbul provided for them. After finishing their training, these three militants called their supporters in Istanbul and asked them to provide them new identity cards, passports and tickets. Our security officials took measures in Van and these persons were captured after they entered Turkey.''

EU EXPRESSES UNEASINES OVER PUBLICATION OF FOGG'S E-MAIL MESSAGES
European Union (EU) officially conveyed its uneasiness to Turkey regarding the leakage of e-mail messages of Representative of EU Commission to Turkey Karen Fogg. EU Commissioner for Enlargement Verheugen summoned Turkey's Permanent Representative to the EU Nihat Akyol and told him that ''you should ensure the physical security and communication safety of our personnel in Turkey. If necessary, the EU Commission's President Prodi will meet with Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit.'' Akyol said in his part that if Fogg continues to be in charge, this will cause uneasiness in the Turkey-EU relations as the public opinion reacted to Fogg.

UNBELIEVABLE ILLEGAL ELECTRIC USAGE
Energy and Natural Resources Minister Zeki Cakan said that the ratio of using electricity illegally in southeastern Turkey changed between 70-92 percent. The terrorist organizations PKK and Hezbollah put pressure on citizens telling them that they should not pay money to the state for long years. ''Almost everybody in southeastern Turkey use electricity illegally. The annual loss of the state is 2 trillion liras. No country can ever stand that,'' Cakan said. Cakan noted that he would dismiss officals who don't fight with this illegal usage of electricity after the feast of sacrifice.

ANIMAL RIGHTS TO COME TO AGENDA AFTER HOLIDAY
Rahsan Ecevit, the deputy leader of the Democratic Left Party (DSP) who expressed sorrow over the death of street cats and dogs, brought onto agenda the bill on animal rights. DSG group deputy leaders Emrehan Halýcý and Aydýn Tumen will visit the political parties after the Feast of Sacrifice about the adoption of the bill as soon as possible.

TURKEY TO TAKE CIVILIZATION TEST DURING FEAST OF SACRIFICE
The prohibition to sacrifice sheep in the streets will be implemented during the Feast of Sacrifice this year. Municipalities will give a fine starting from 54,5 million liras for those citizens who don't abide by the prohibition. The amount of the fine will be two folds if the citizens don't leave the scene clean. Therefore, certain places have been allocated for the feast. If the citizens abide by the call, the modern image of Turkey will not be stained.

ENERGY MINISTER CAKAN SAYS ELECTRICITY PRICES TO DECREASE
Energy and Natural Resources Minister Zeki Cakan said that there would not be any energy shortage in Turkey until 2006. ''The thing that affects the energy cost is the fuel input. We will produce lignite cheaper and privatize mine pits. Therefore, we will decrease the price of electricity by 50 percent. I will announce the figures soon,'' he said.

IP FILES SUIT ABOUT FOREIGN MINISTER CEM
Labour Party (IP) deputy leader Hasan Yalcýn filed a suit about Foreign Minister Ismail Cem and some other ministry officials claiming that they exchanged secret information with Representative of EU Commission to Turkey Karen Fogg. Foreign Ministry issued a statement telling that the claims put forward by Hasan Yalcýn were not true and they couldn't be taken seriously. Meanwhile, many non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Turkey requested the deportation of Fogg from Turkey.

ECEVIT REITERATES HIS CONCERN ABOUT IRAQ
Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit received the U.S. delegation from the House of Representatives yesterday and told them that any operation against Iraq would bring damage rather than use. ''The Iraqi problem can be solved by methods other than military ones, and this is the correct method,'' Ecevit said. Wexler, the Chairman of the U.S. delegation said that the U.S. trusts Britain and Turkey, which are its real allies in the fight against terrorism. The delegation also noted that the U.S. would definitely take into consideration the sensitivities of Turkey if it takes a decision about Iraq.

15 AMBASSADORS WANT SECURITY
The publication of e-mail messages of Representative of EU Commission to Turkey Karen Fogg set the European Union (EU) countries' 15 embassies in Ankara into action. The ambassadors who applied to Foreign Ministry wanted more security. The ambassadors of the countries except the EU's are also worried about that matter. The European diplomats, who share the view that Turkey supports this illicit matter secretly, had recourse to the measures which will increase their communication securities.

DISCUSSION IN DEATH PENALTY
The opening to the signature of death penalty draft within the framework of the adjustment to the Constitution increased the tension in the discussions. Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) deputy leader Sevket Yahnici, who shares Justice Minister Hikmet Sami Turk's view that the death penalty could also be lifted completely without rechanging the Constitution, said, ''if they find the ground in the parliament, they shall change it. However, if they will say clearly that we make this in order to rescue 22 people including Abdullah Ocalan, they shall do.'' State Minister Nejat Arseven said, ''I don't excuse anyone, but we cannot judge Fehriye Erdal and Cemalettin Kaplan due to the death penalty. In other words, shall those 22 people prevent the future of Turkey?''

COROLLA MORALE
Toyota launched on Tuesday an export breakthrough of the new generation Corolla automobiles produced in Toyota Adapazari motor vehicles factory. Toyota Automotive Industry Turkey (TMMT) which has become a strategic production center for Europe by Toyota is starting to export over 40,000 Corollas, Sedans and Station Wagons to 22 countries in a year. TMMT, as a producer and an exporter, participates in the ranks of Britain and France as a part of widining Toyota's being in Europe. TMMT will produce 47,000 vehicles, including also the production towards the domestic market, in 2002.

ORAL: ''VAT MAY DECREASE IN 2003''
Finance Minister Sumer Oral said that there would be no decrease in value added tax (VAT) in 2002 and adding that a decrease in the tax in 2002 could lead an imbalance in the budget. Oral stated that they could change the tax rates to revive the economy in the following year. He noted that the budget gave 1.4 quadrillion Turkish liras non-interest surplus in January. Oral added that a decrease in VAT might be in 2003 to revive the economy.

UNEMPLOYED BOSSES ALSO APPLY TO UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE
Not only workers but also employers have applied to the umemployment insurance. Turkish Employment Service (Is-Kur) Director General Necdet Kenar said that even tradesmen who went bankrupt applied to the unemployment insurance in the first days when the applications to the insurance began. Kenar stated, ''the tradesmen who lost their jobs apply to the insurance.'' Kenar added that the number of the insured people who applied to the unemployment insurance was convenient to the expectations and possibilities of the institution.
