ANKARA - Turkish police shot a suicide bomber to death after he tried to set off explosives on himself in front of the Justice Ministry in Turkish capital of Ankara, sources said.
Sources noted that an ID card with the name of Muharrem Akyurt was found on the suspect, and stated that whether the ID was genuine or fake was being investigated.
As the crime scene investigation teams completed their work at the scene of the incident, the body of the suicide bomber was sent to the Forensic Medicine Institute for autopsy.
According to recent information received, a person who wanted to enter the Justice Ministry was stopped by a police officer as the X-ray equipment beeped. When the suspect reacted, the suspect was forced to lie down with the help of other police officers.
The suspect tried to detonate the explosives on himself as he was tried to be handcuffed. When one of the fuses in the explosive device went off, police officers were startled and the suspect ran away from the ministry. He was handcuffed as he escaped into the street.
As the suicide bomber did not abide by the call of police officers to stop, he was first shot in the leg. When police officers tried to render the bomber ineffective after he fell down, he tried to detonate the explosives again.
Then, security officers shot the suspect in the head, and he died at the scene of the incident.
Afterwards, police surrounded the area for investigation. Bomb experts are analyzing the materials found on the bomber.
