ANKARA, Feb 6 (A.A) - Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency (BRSA) reported profit of Ziraat and Halk banks as 543 trillion Turkish liras (TL) in December 2001.
BRSA issued the ''Banking Sector Restructuring Program: Progress Report'' on Wednesday.
The report said that the total losses of those two banks as of April 2001 was 598 trillion TL while these two banks recorded a profit of 543 trillion in December 2001.
The Halk Bankasi's loss which was 740 trillion TL in the mentioned period regressed to 570 trillion TL. Thus, the total losses of the state banks which was 1.3 quadrillion TL between January and April, decreased to 27 trillion between January and December.
According to the report, the amount of source that the state banks used from Central Bank decreased to 1.9 quadrillion TL as of January 18, 2002. This amount was 5.5 quadrillion TL on March 16, 2001.
The paid-in capital of state banks in the end of source allocation was 477 trillion TL in December 2000 while this figure increased to 3.4 quadrillion TL in December 2001. Their total equity climbed from 712 trillion to 4.1 quadrillion TL.
Ziraat Bankasi recorded 65 trillion TL of profit in 2000 while this amount increased to 543 trillion TL. Halk Bankasi made a profit of 5 trillion TL in 2000 while closed last year with 570 trillion TL of loss.
There were significant betterments in capitalization ration of state banks in 2001. The capitalization ratio which was 7.1 percent in December 2000 climbed to 11.6 percent in March 2001, 25.5 percent in June 2001 and 36.5 percent in September 2001.
The receivables of state banks was 1 quadrillion 17 trillion TL by the end of 2000 while this figure reached 3 quadrillion 365 trillion TL at the end of 2001.
Some significant steps have been taken to reduce the number of branches and personnel of state banks. The number of branches which was 2,494 as of December 2000 fell to 2,398 in December 2001 and the number of personnel decreased from 61,601 to 47,985 in the mentioned period.
Total assets of state banks (Ziraat, Halk and Emlakban) which were 30.8 quadrillion TL by the end of 2000 increased by 44.6 percent to 44.6 quadrillion TL in December 2001.
Loan portfolio of state banks stagnated nominally by 16.4 percent in 2001.
