PROF. ISIKARA SAYS SUNDAY'S QUAKE WILL BE NAMED AS SULTANDAGI QUAKE
Bogazici University Kandilli Observatory Center and Seismology Institute Director Ahmet Mete Isikara said Sunday's strong quake which occurred in Aegean Afyon province would be named ''Sultandagi quake''.
Prof. Isikara held a news conference in Kandilli Observatory and briefed the reporters on the quake.
Recalling that a strong quake occurred today at 9:11 local time measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale, Isikara said, ''quakes had occurred in this region earlier. Following the evaluations we made with our friends, we decided to call this quake as the Sultandagi quake.
Prof. Isikara said 23 aftershocks were recorded after the strong earthquake, noting that, ''the biggest aftershock, measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale, occurred at 11:26 local time. Those aftershocks will continue.''
Pointing out that all the schools recessed in the region after the quake, Isikara said all the schools were examined to see if there is a damage or not.
Prof. Isikara advised the citizens of the quake hit region not to enter the damaged buildings, and noted that minor damaged buildings can be medium damaged building in case of an aftershock. He said it would be appropriate for the citizens to act according to the information that would be given by the officials.
PROFESSOR ISIKARA SAYS THE HIGHER THE CONSCIOUSNESS OF THE SOCIETY IS, THE LOWER THE DAMAGES OF A POSSIBLE QUAKE WILL BE
Isikara told a press conference that Turkey was a country of earthquake.
''We should not ask the question if there will be an earthquake. An earthquake may occur in any part of Turkey. Earthquakes will continue to be recorded. An earthquake may occur in another part of our country tomorrow. This is quake reality and we have to live together with this reality,'' Isikara said.
Isikara noted that it was possible to reduce the damages of an earthquake and stated that the institution had prepared not only visual but also written educational documents and these documents should be published and broadcast.
Professor Isikara said that it was possible to get protected from a possible earthquake and noted, ''we have to have an understanding to live in quake-resistant houses. Secondly, we have to be well-informed about what can be done prior, during and after an earthquake.''
Isikara noted that the media undertook important duties regarding this issue.
PROF. ISIKARA SAYS IT IS NOT POSSIBLE FOR EARTHQUAKE IN SULTANDAGI TO TRIGGER ANOTHER PLACE
Isikara said that it was not possible for the earthquake in Sultandagi to trigger another place.
Isikara told a press conference that the fault line in Sultandagi had earlier produced earthquakes and stressed that it could also produce earthquakes in the future.
There was a different system in West Anatolia, Isikara said and noted that it was not possible for this earthquake to trigger another place.
There were many different focuses in Turkey related with earthquake, Isikara pointed out.
Isikara said, ''the most important is the North Anatolia Fault Line and the Marmara extention of this line. There is also East Anatolia Fault Line. The North Anatolian Fault Line towards Erzincan, Erzurum and Kars. There are some places we call collapsed basins in the Aegean. These places produce earthquakes. Here, there is normal slope fault. To this end, any connection cannot be linked between the fault lines.''
