ROME, Jan 30 (A.A) - Italian Environment Ministry has been convinced to take back the barrels containing toxic waste which Italy dumped into the Black Sea 15 years ago.
International environmental group Greenpeace had recently held a protest in front of the Environment Ministry in Rome and asked the Italian government to take back the barrels from Turkey.
Italian Environment Minister Altero Matteoli received a Greenpeace delegation on Wednesday. After the meeting, Greenpeace members Vittoria Polidori and Domitilla Senni told the A.A that their request had been accepted by Matteoli.
They said that Matteoli would bring up the matter during the Ministers' Council meeting on Friday and he would ask the government to guarantee that the toxic waste barrels in the Black Sea would be taken back to Italy.
Senni said that the barrels had to be taken back to Italy and they should be destroyed in a safe manner.
