ANNIVERSARY OF TURKISH CYPRIOTS' RESISTANCE AGAINST BRITISH COLONIAL ADMINISTRATION COMMEMORATED
The 44th anniversary of the Turkish Cypriots' resistance against British colonial administration between January 27 and 28, 1958, and those who lost their lives during the resistance were commemorated in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) on Sunday.
The first ceremony to commemorate seven martyrs of the resistance which is accepted as the beginning of the Turkish Cypriots' first social and organized struggle, took place in front of Martyrs Memorial in Lefkosa.
Participants laid a wreath and observed a minute of silence out of respect to the martyrs.
The second ceremony was held in the Kucukkaymakli graveyard in which martyrs were laid to rest.
Speaking at the ceremony, Association of Families of Martyrs and Disabled Ghazis Deputy Secretary General Seyhan Cambaz said, ''the Turkish Cypriots struggled with a great determination against unilateral and baseless structure of the British colonial administration. Turkish Cypriots started a struggle 44 years ago in order to protect their existence and freedom against Greek Cypriot side, Greece and British colonial administration. British colonial administration adopted a passive and tolerant attitude towards terrorist acts of Greek Cypriots and Greeks to annihilate Turkish Cypriots.''
She added, ''during the two-day resistance of the Turkish Cypriots, the British administration sent tanks and soldiers armed with automotic weapons to intimidate Turkish Cypriot people. Seven Turkish Cypriots were killed and 15 others were injured in the incident.''
Deputy Parliament Speaker Unal Ustel of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) said on Sunday, ''Turkish Cypriots' resistance against British colonial army between January 27 and 28, 1958, was taken its place in the history of humanity as a noble example of uprising against imperialism.''
Ustel released a message to mark the 44th anniversary of the Turkish Cypriots' resistance against British colonial administration between January 27 and 28, 1958.
In his message, Ustel said, ''the TRNC was founded as a result of a long-standing struggle. We commemorate our martyrs with a great gratitude.''
Meanwhile, TRNC Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu said, ''the only guarantees for Turkish Cypriots' security and future are sovereignty and equality. Turkish Cypriots suffered their first martyrs during the resistance between January 27 and 28. This resistance accelerated the history, and lit the torch of first social and organized struggle. This resistance showed the whole world that any solution reached by ignoring Turkish Cypriot people would not last long. Turkish Cypriots are determined not to make any concession from their freedom and sovereignty.''
