Number Of Foreign Tourists Visiting Trabzon Increases 81 Percent In 2001

TRABZON, Jan 25 (A.A) - The number of foreign tourists who visited Trabzon province in Black Sea region in 2001 increased by 81 percent and the number of domestic tourists rose by 13 percent when compared to the previous year.
Officials at the Tourism Directorate in Trabzon told the A.A correspondent on Friday that a total of 1,035,157 people, including 740,462 domestic tourists, 278,777 European tourists and 15,918 people from the countries of Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) visited Trabzon in 2001 where Sumela Monastery is also located.
The region has obtained 74 trillion 469 billion 650 million Turkish liras (TL) of income from those visits.
In 2000, a total of 828,405 people including 652,655 domestic tourists, 154,000 foreign tourists, 21,750 people from the countries of CIS had travelled Trabzon.
Most of the domestic tourists who came to Trabzon visited Uzungol and Ataturk Palace while foreign tourists preferred to visit Sumela Monastery and Haghia Sophia Museum.
A total of 81,180 domestic tourists and 16,117 foreign tourists visited Sumela Monestary, 186,442 domestic tourists and 2,318 foreign tourists visited Uzungol and 39,576 domestic, 8,085 foreign tourists visited Haghia Sophia Museum in 2001.
