WASHINGTON - The White House on Tuesday demanded an investigation into the killing of an anti-Syrian politician in Lebanon and linked the slaying to Syria's longstanding influence over its smaller neighbor.
"We strongly condemn the assassination" spokesman Scott McClellan said of the killing of George Hawi, a former head of the Lebanese communist party whose car was blown up earlier in the day.
"There needs to be a full investigation into the assassination. People who are responsible must be brought to justice," said McClellan.
