Denktas: They Are Discussing The Principles Of The Agreement

LEFKOSA, Jan 23 (A.A) - Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Rauf Dnektas has said that he discussed the principles of an agreement with Greek Cypriot leader Glafcos Clerides.
Denktas stated that misinterpretations would mislead people and called on people to stay calm against such comments.
After today's meeting with Clerides, Denktas said he would meet him again on Friday.
When asked if he would discuss ''constitutional matters with Clerides'' on Friday, Denktas said, ''it would be wrong to call it a constitutional matter. We're discussing the principles of an agreement and we'll continue on that.''
When asked about the attitude of Greek Cypriot side during the talks, Denktas said ''They're expressing their own views, listening to us and taking notes. We're doing the same thing.''
Responding a question about attitude of United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan's Special Representative Alvaro de Soto who has been attending the meetings as observer, President Denktas said, ''de Soto do not intervene in the side. He just listens to talks.''
Describing news stories about ''United Cypriot States'' as totaly nonsense, President Denktas said, ''I will inform leaders of political parties in the TRNC on Monday on the face-to-face meetings with Clerides. The Greek Cypriot National Council knows everything. Clerides has been acting in line with decisions taken by the National Council. Therefore, we have to inform our political parties on developments.''
Responding a question, President Denktas described the Cyprus Report adopted by the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly as a good development.
Meanwhile, Greek Cypriot leader Clerides will inform leaders of Greek Cypriot political parties on Thursday on face-to-face meetings.
TRNC PRESIDENT DENKTAS SAYS HE HAS BEEN INTRANSIGENT AGAINST EVERY PROPOSAL WHICH WILL PUT TURKISH CYPRIOTS INTO THE POSITION OF MINORITY AND HE WILL CONTINUE TO DO SO
President Rauf Denktas of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) said on Wednesday that, ''I have been intransigent against every proposal which will put Turkish Cypriots into the position of minority and I will continue to do so,'' noting that this was an honor for him.
Speaking to reporters before meeting Greek Cypriot leader Glafcos Clerides, Denktas said, ''I will accept anything proposing equality, not minority, before them.''
When asked if they would discuss constitutional issues, Denktas recalled that a ban not to reveal information regarding the meeting to the media, noting that, ''we said we were starting.''
Denktas said the talks would recess during the Feast of Sacrifice, noting that the U.N. Secretary General's Special Envoy to Cyprus Alvaro De Soto, who attends the talks in observer status, would go to New York.
Denktas and Clerides convened for the third time in the buffer zone within the framework of direct talks which started on January 16 aiming for finding a solution to Cyprus question.
MUMTAZ SOYSAL SAYS CONSTITUTIONAL ISSUES MUST BE SOLVED FIRST
Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Rauf Denktas's constitutional adviser Prof. Mumtaz Soysal has said that constitutional issues must be solved first during the talks.
Prof. Soysal told the A.A that the Turkish side was prepared for any possibility during the talks.
Soysal declined to answer the A.A's questions about the debated issues since there is a ban for both sides to give information to the press. He only said all matters were being assessed between Denktas and Greek Cypriot leader Clerides.
Soysal indicated that constitutional issues should be given priority during the talks and other matters could follow them.
