ANKARA, Jan 23 (A.A) - Ankara Heavy Criminal Court No: 9 sentenced on Wednesday Cahit Tekelioglu, a deputy of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), to 2 years, 9 months and 10 days of imprisonment in the case filed regarding the death of True Path Party (DYP) deputy Fevzi Sihanlioglu.
The court acquitted MHP deputy Mehmet Kundakci.
After the intervenor lawyer had expressed his views regarding the merits of the case, the suspect's lawyer made his defense.
Chief judge Omer Yilmaz Camlibel said that they sentenced Cahit Tekelioglu to 2 years, 9 months and 10 days of heavy imprisonment on charges that he committed the crime due to heavy and unjust incitement.
Camlibel noted that they acquitted Kindakci because of lack of evidence in death of Sihanlioglu.
TEKELIOGLU TO BE STRIPPED OFF HIS DEPUTYSHIP IF SUPREME COURT APPROVES VERDICT
National Movement Party (MHP) deputy Cahit Tekelioglu will be stripped off his deputyship if the conviction is upheld by he Supreme Court of Appeals, it was reported on Wednesday.
Tekelioglu was sentenced to two years and nine months of prison term for causing the death of Fevzi Sihanlioglu from the True Path Party (DYP). Tekelioglu can appeal to a higher court. His conviction will gain certainty after the approval of the Supreme Court.
Under article 84 of the Constitution, Tekelioglu will be stripped off his deputyship after the final decision is presented to Parliament General Council.
Sihanlioglu had died after a fight that broke out between the deputies during discussions of Parliament bylaw on Jan.31, 2001. A legal case was opened against Tekelioglu and Mehmet Kundakci who was also from the MHP.
Ankara High Criminal Court earlier today convicted Tekelioglu and acquitted Kundakci.
