LEFKOSA, Jan 15 (A.A) - Rauf Denktas, the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) said on Tuesday that documents were not exchanged with the Greek Cypriot side about the missing people, adding that the document of the Turkish Cypriot side is ready and it could be sent today.
Responding to questions of journalists in his meeting with Chinese representative to Cyprus Song Aeguo, Denktas said that the documents were not exchanged yesterday due to the difficulties the Greek Cypriots faced.
Denktas said that he would not meet with U.N. Secretary General's Special Representative to Cyprus Alvaro De Soto today who came to Cyprus to participate in the direct talks.
''There is no need to meet with De Soto, who wants to tell the news as if the former intercommunal talks would start in the island. I will meet with Clerides,'' Denktas said.
Stressing that the task of De Soto is to inform U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan about their direct talks with Clerides upon the demand of Clerides.
Denktas added that there is no need for unnecessary visits to the island for show-off.
CYPRUS TURK MUCHADID'S ASSOCIATIONS EXTEND FULL SUPPORT TO DENKTAS
Cyprus Turk Muchadid's Associations (KTMD) on Tuesday extended full support to Rauf Denktas, the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), who would start direct talks with Greek Cypriot leader Glafcos Clerides on Wednesday.
KTMD Chairman Faik Koyuncuoglu issued a written statement and stressed that they expended support to an agreement which will protect the political equality and Turkey's rights in a united state.
Koyuncuoglu said they felt sorry over the statement of ''Turkish Cypriots need the agreement more than the Greek Cypriots, so that we should reach an agreement,'' and noted that those statements encouraged Greek Cypriots.
Koyuncuoglu said such kind of statements created the image in the world public opinion as if Turkish Cypriots are in impasse.
BRITISH PROFESSOR PREPARES A REPORT ABOUT CYPRUS
A report about the Cyprus question prepared by Prof. Dr. Lord William Wallace, the British economy and politics professor, described face-to-face meetings between President Rauf Denktas of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and Greek Cypriot leader Glafcos Clerides as a great opportunity.
Wallace held a press conference at the Turkish Industrialists' and Businessmen's Association (TUSIAD) office in Brussels on Tuesday, and informed journalists on his report.
The report titled, ''Compromise on Cyprus: A Window of Opportunity'' described face-to-face meetings between President Denktas and Clerides as a window of opportunity that would not remain open for a long time, and called on the two sides on the island, Turkey, Greece and the European Union (EU) to seize this opportunity.
Wallace said that the Greek Cypriot side could become a full member of the EU before a solution was found on the island, and added that such a development would bring forth tragedies for all sides.
He said that if the EU accepted Cyprus' membership before solving its problems, positive developments in relations between Turkey and Greece would worsen, the Cyprus question would deepen, and a crisis would erupt in relations between Turkey and the EU.
Defending that the Cyprus question was also a problem of the EU, Wallace claimed that member countries to the EU should play a more active role in efforts to find a solution to the Cyprus question for the success of the EU's enlargement process.
Noting that a united Cyprus could became a member of the NATO after solving its problems, Wallace said that relevant countries could overcome their concerns about security in that case.
Wallace added that Spain, the term president of the EU, should give priority to the Cyprus question on its agenda.
