ANKARA, Jan 15 (A.A) - Culture Ministry on Tuesday invited Muhammad al-Bassam, the Saudi Ambassador to Turkey, to visit Zeugma Ancient City, Sinop Castle and historical works of art in Iznik as the guest of the ministry.
Culture Ministry issued a written statement and briefed about the Zeugma Ancient City, Sinop Castle and historical works of art, which al-Bassam asked for his personal interest.
The statement said within the scope of ''Urgent Rescue'' program implemented in Zeugma Ancient City since October 1999, all the works that will remain under the waters of Euphrates were rescued, and that a detailed documentation proceeding was made as a result of the excavations.
Pointing out that none of the works of art that was brought onto daylight from Zeugma were left to decay, the statement said restoration of most of the mosaics were completed.
The statement said repair of Sinop Castle continued within the framework of a definite program, adding that business places around the castle continued to be emptied.
Pointing out that Iznik was one of the most favorite regions of the country with its historical places and works of arts, the statement said any negligence was out of question.
The statement said a project was prepared for the repair of Iznik city walls, adding that works started in this respect.
The statement said Ambassador al-Bassam would visit the historial places in question, and may see the works of restoration in Turkey.
The statement said al-Bassam could satify his personal interest, and could have more information about the historical and cultural values of the country where he was acting as Ambassador.
Stressing that Turkey, which had hosted many civilizations throughout the history, protected all cultural wealth of those civilizations, the statement said Turkey has the right to expect for the same sensitivity from all the countries.
