LEFKOSA, Jan 14 (A.A) - United Nations (U.N.) Secretary General's Special Envoy to Cyprus Alvaro De Soto arrived in the island on Sunday.
De Soto will attend the direct talks to begin between President Rauf Denktas of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and Greek Cypriot leader Glafcos Clerides on January 16.
The special envoy told reporters that he was optimist as he came to the island and said that the talks to begin on January 16 were an encouraging development.
De Soto noted that hopes were existing at the moment and stated that there were new things and a new wind had started to blow.
The international community was encouraged by the developments, De Soto pointed out and added that his friends and he came to the island to assist both of the sides in the solution process.
De Soto will separately meet with Denktas and Clerides on Monday. Denktas-De Soto meeting will start at 3.30 p.m.
