LEFKOSA, Jan 10 (A.A) - Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Rauf Denktas and Greek Cypriot leader Glafcos Clerides will meet again on Friday to discuss the issue of missing people.
The meeting will take place in the residence of UN Secretary General Cyprus Special Deputy Representative Zbigniew Wlosowicz which is in the buffer zone.
Wlosowicz visited Denktas briefly today but no statement was made to the press after the meeting.
Tomorrow's meeting will be the forth meeting of Clerides and Denktas in one month.
The two leaders had their first meeting on Dec. 4, 2001 after a break of four years. On Jan.16, 2002, they decided to start face-to-face talks and later they had dinner first in the TRNC and later in Southern Cyprus.
During the dinner in Southern Cyprus, the two leaders had debated the issue of missing people and they agreed to work together to bring a solution to the problem.
Tomorrow's meeting will be closed to press.
FORMER PRESIDENT DEMIREL ARRIVES IN TRNC: IT IS TIME TO SOLVE CYPRUS PROBLEM
Former President Suleyman Demirel said on Thursday that ''it is time to solve the Cyprus problem now.''
''This is a hope, hope is not everything, but it is a power. Our visit to the island with this hope constitutes a support to Denktas,'' said Demirel.
Speaking at Ercan Airport in TRNC on his arrival, Demirel said that the conditions of a permanent peace in Cyprus exist, adding that ''it is now time to find a permanent solution to this political problem.''
Demirel said that he hoped the peace initiative started by TRNC President Denktas to result in success, adding that Turkish Cypriot people suffered a lot and this had to end.
''Turkey deals with Cyprus problem and it is involved in it,'' he said, adding that Turkey wanted peace.
Demirel pointed out that everybody in Turkey has expectations, adding that this expectation increased the responsibility of those who will sit at negotiation table for peace.
Former President Demirel said that he came to TRNC for three times as the President and noted that the promises given to TRNC at that time were still valid.
Demirel said that he watches the Cyprus problem like he watched it in the past, adding that there would be better days.
Demirel noted that he is involved in Cyprus issue for 40 years, hoping the fight started by TRNC President Denktas to give a successful result. ''This success is to the interest of the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot nations and the region,'' he said.
Responding to a question of a journalist asking his views about the statement of Guenter Verheugen, the EU Commissioner responsible for enlargement, Demirel said that the things told by Verheugen went beyond his capacity.
Demirel said that people should avoid from making more difficult the peace efforts which started on December 4 and which would continue in the coming days.
''The words of Verheugen don't mean that they were told by the EU,'' said Demirel and noted that there is no one government that represents the whole Cyprus. There are two separate political states in north and south, said Demirel and noted that he would be surprised if Cyprus is admitted to the EU without recognizing the political equality of Turkish Cypriots and without finding a solution to the political problem.
Demirel said that such kind of statements would not affect the attitude of the Turkish Cypriot side, adding that Turkey and TRNC will always be together.
Demirel said that he worked with former foreign minister Hikmet Cetin and former national minister Vefa Tanýr who accompanied him in his visit, adding that ''we will try to protect the past.''
TRNC President Denktas thanked Foreign Press Union for bringing Demirel and his friends to the island.
Denktas said that he wanted to see Demirel again in the island.
