ANKARA, Jan 10 (A.A) - President Ahmet Necdet Sezer said on Thursday that while the state takes measures to prevent formation of monopoly in media and to protect the pluralist, independent and impartial structure of the press, the latter should also act in a responsible manner.
Issuing a message upon the January 10, Journalists Day, Sezer said that the freedom of press is a freedom which complements the freedom of thought and expression.
''The status of press in one country is one of the important signs of its development,'' said Sezer in his message.
''The members of press should take as basis the protection of individual rights and freedoms, they should give priority to principles of journalism and ethics and they should not attribute importance to personal interests,'' said Sezer.
Sezer added that the government takes measures to improve the working and living conditions of press members.
