ANKARA, Jan 10 (A.A) - True Path Party (DYP), the main opposition party applied to the Constitutional Court on Thursday requesting the cancellation of certain provisions of Tobacco Law.
DYP deputy group leader Ali Riza Gonul who submitted the petition to the Constitutional Court told reporters that they believed that tobacco producers and Turkish tobacco were suffering.
DYP deputy Ahmet Iyimaya told reporters that the tobacco law had to be cancelled totally, as it was detrimental to national sovereignty.
Claiming that the tobacco farmers were tried to be eliminated in the name of ''reconstruction,'' Iyimaya said that a majority of the economic section in Turkey would be subject to deprivation.
''If the main articles of this law are cancelled including Article 6, the law has to be cancelled totally,'' said Iyimaya.
The petition of DYP asserted that the law would turn Turkey into a country of foreign cigarette market and claimed that it would be very detrimental to Turkish farmers.
President Ahmet Necdet Sezer had earlier sent back the Tobacco Law to the parliament. The parliament discussed it again and adopted it on January 3, 2002 as it is. The law was published in the Official Gazette on Wednesday and went into force.
