ANKARA, Jan 8 (A.A) - Motherland Party (ANAP) Deputy Chairman Bulent Akarcali has said that Turkish citizens all around the world should send letters to Saudi Arabian embassies to condemn the annihilation of the castle which was built by the Ottomans in Mecca.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday at Parliament, Akarcali said that he warned Foreign Minister Ismail Cem about the castle's possible destruction, but Cem said something to the effect of ''don't worry, nothing serious will happen.''
Akarcali accused the related ministries and the government for not showing much attention which led to the annihilation of the castle.
''Turkey could have applied to the Organization of Islamic Conference or tried to make the U.N. take the castle under protection as a world heritage,'' he commented.
During his press conference, Akarcali gave internet sites to denounce this cultural violence to the world public opinion and called on Turkish citizens all around the world to send letters to Saudi Arabian embassies and condemn this act.
Akarcali also criticized the Foreign Ministry for neglecting Parliament and parliamentarians in its activities. He said they were able to contact the U.S. senate and congress members through the U.S. Embassy. ''U.S. Senate and Congress members are visiting our country often, but we can contact them only through the U.S. Embassy since the Foreign Ministry doesn't include Parliament in its program,'' he said. He also added that parliamentarians weren't invited to international meetings held in Turkey.
