BAKU - An escalator collapsed in an underground metro station in Azerbaijan's capital Baku on Wednesday, injuring 11 people people, officials said.
Passengers standing on the escalator plunged through its stairs and a number were seriously hurt, officials and witnesses said.
In a statement, the national prosecutor general's office said 11 people had been hurt in the accident. It said that a criminal investigation had been opened.
On October 28, 1995, a fire broke out in the Baku metro resulting in the deaths of 290 people, the most deadly subway accident on the territory of the former Soviet Union. Two people died in another Baku metro fire on August 4, 1999.
