BRUSSELS - European Union (EU) spokesman Francoise Le Bail has indicated today (Monday) that there is no relationship between the French referendum and Turkey's accession process.
Le Bail evaluated the French referendum at his daily press conference. Asked about how the French referendum will have an impact on the negotiation process with Turkey, Le Bail remarked that the process of approving the EU constitution and the enlargement process are two separate issues.
Le Bail told that the decision of enlargement was taken by EU's highest ranking institution, European Council, and that Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey and Croatia will become members once they fulfill EU requirements and criteria.
''The enlargement process is going on with full force based on the decision of the European Council,'' commented Le Bail.
Le Bail expressed that what took place in France (referendum) must be analyzed deeply and studied closely. ''We will discuss this matter in detail at the EU summit in Brussels between June 16th-17th,'' noted Le Bail.
According to Le Bail, every one involved must question the result that occurred in France. ''The EU Commission and European Parliament will evaluate the French vote on the constitution. Apparently, there is an information gap between the EU and its citizens,'' mentioned Le Bail.
Le Bail added that to this day nine EU member states, covering 49 percent of the overall population, voted in favor of the EU constitution and that all peoples must express their viewpoints on the matter.
