EU'S SECRET REPORT ON CYPRUS
European Union (EU)-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Commission Co-chairman Joost Lagendijk who paid a visit to Cyprus last month criticized harshly both EU and also Greek Cypriot leader Tassos Papadopoulos in his report. The report stated that Greek Cypriots prevented packages prepared by the EU to save Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) from isolation, noting that Greek Cypriots' saying 'no' to the plan of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan strengthened ethnical separation. It stated that EU was responsible for current deadlock in Cyprus.

YILDIRIM: ''VAT IN TRANSPORTATION SHOULD BE DECREASED''
Energy and Natural Resources Minister Binali Yildirim said that VAT in transportation should be decreased to develop further transportation system. Guler noted that he would convey this issue to the government.

PASSENGER BUS PLUNGES INTO RIVER
A passenger bus plunged into Aras River near Sarikamis town of eastern Turkish city of Kars, killing seven people and injuring 38 others. The bus was on its way from Istanbul to Azerbaijan. Meanwhile, search-and-rescue efforts are under way to find four missing people.

TOLON: ''TURKS HAVE NEVER COMMITTED GENOCIDE''
Turkish First Army Commander Gen. Hursit Tolon said that Turks had never committed genocide in their history. ''Our archives have already been opened. We condemn those who try to defame our history without conducting appropriate studies,'' he stressed.

BOMB DERAILS TWO CARS OF FREIGHT TRAIN
A bomb exploded under a freight train in southeastern Turkish city of Elazig, derailing two cars but causing no casualties. The explosion caused damage to around 50 meters of track and disrupted transportation.

TURKEY ALARM
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice warned the European Union (EU) that if the Union did not admit Turkey, it would yield unfavorable results. Responding to a question about the ratification of new EU constitution after her speech at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco, Rice said, ''failure of the EU to eventually admit Turkey could have dire consequences. It is important that Turkey be admitted after it meets EU standards because what we cannot afford to have is a divide between Turkey and the rest of Europe.''

INITIATIVE LAUNCHED FOR TURKISH BUSINESSMAN KIDNAPPED IN IRAQ
Turkish Ambassador to Iraq Osman Paksut launched initiative for Turkish businessman Ali Musluoglu who was kidnapped in Baghdad, Iraq to be released. Paksut started holding talks in Iraq.

ARINC EULOGIZES SECULARISM
Turkish Parliament Speaker Bulent Arinc, who is currently in the United States on a state visit, eulogized secular order. ''Each country has different ways of secularism practices in line with their own conditions and social requirements. I think that the United States' secular understanding is the most appropriate one for real secularism,'' he said. Arinc added that the most important difference between Turkey and the other Muslim countries was the secular system.

Governor Ibrahim Ozcimen of Mus said that the explosion caused damage to around 50 meters of track and disrupted transportation. The train was on its way to Elazig to the west.

POLAND PRESENTS TURKISH FILM DIRECTOR GUNALTAY WITH MEDAL OF MERIT
President Alexander Kawasniewski of Poland presented Turkish film director Faruk Gunaltay with the medal of merit. Gunaltay, director of a theatre in Strasbourg, will be given his award on June 8th for his support to Polish cinema.

Gheorghe Hagi resigned on Saturday as coach of Turkish soccer team Galatasaray. He resigned after Denizlispor beat Galatasaray 4-0 in the Turkish Super League.

BABACAN ASSIGNED AS CHIEF NEGOTIATOR AND STUDIES REGARDING EU SPEEDED UP
Studies regarding Turkey's European Union (EU) accession were speeded up, after Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that State Minister Ali Babacan was assigned as the chief negotiator for Turkey's entry talks with the EU. Babacan had meetings with Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and officials of Turkey's Secretariat General for the EU twice a week.

''WE CANNOT AFFORD A DIVIDE BETWEEN TURKEY AND REST OF EUROPE''
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice warned that the failure of the European Union (EU) to admit Turkey's full membership could have dire consequences. ''It is important that Turkey be admitted after it meets EU standards because what we cannot afford to have is a divide between Turkey and the rest of Europe. It might look like what was once described as the clash of civilizations between Muslim Turkey and Christian Europe. That would be a very terrible thing,'' she added.

MILD QUAKE ROCKS KONYA
A mild earthquake measuring 3.2 on the Richter scale jolted central Turkish city of Konya. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damages in the quake which sent people out to the streets in panic.

Germany's Consul General in Istanbul Reiner Mockelmann has said that Turkey should increase its lobby activities in Europe in the coming period. Delivering a speech in ''Turkey-EU Symposium'' held by Berlin Initiative of European Turks (BATI) at Isik University in Istanbul, Mockelmann stated that he thought that German Christian Democrat Union Party (CDU), which was known for its strong opposition to Turkey's EU accession would not achieve a great success in a possible early elections.
