NURBURGRING, Germany - Spanish driver Fernando Alonso won the European Grand Prix here on Sunday to extend his lead in the Formula One overall standings.
The Renault driver beat home Germany`s Nick Heidfeld in a Williams while Brazilian Rubens Barrichello was third in a Ferrari.
Alonso benefitted from Finnish driver and race leader Kimi Raikkonen suffering a spectacular blowout entering the final lap.
The Spaniard had been chasing down Raikkonen - winner of the previous two races - as the tyres on the Finn`s McLaren had been worn away during the race.
Heidfeld took second for the second consecutive race while Barrichello did well to recover from going off at the first corner of the race to record his first podium place of the season.
