BERLIN (AA) - Leading names of Turkish community in Germany don't welcome decision on early elections which was brought onto the agenda after Sunday's elections in North Rhine-Westphalia state.
Social Democrats' (SPD) Federal Parliament member Lale Akgun said that if her party lost the political power after a possible early election, this would create a problematic situation in terms of relations with Turkey.
Stating that they did not win elections held in North Rhine-Westphalia and results shocked her, Akgun noted that she thought that German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and SPD leader Franz Muntefering would not make a decision on early elections.
''If we lose early elections, it wouldn't be good for relations with Turkey. Fortunately, the starting date of Turkey's membership talks with the European Union (EU) is before a possible early election,'' she indicated.
Akgun stressed that the Turkish government should speed up its EU process.
