ISTANBUL (AA) - Turkish soccer team Fenerbahce beat its rival Galatasaray 1-0 in Istanbul on Sunday evening and guaranteed to be the Champion of the Turkish Super League.
In a highly charged match at the club's Sukru Saracoglu stadium, Fenerbahce defeated Galatasaray with a 65th minute goal from Brazilian striker Marcio Nobre.
The Super League matches will finish next week, but Fenerbahce advanced to 80 points while former UEFA Cup winners Galatasaray, 15-times domestic champions, remain on 73 points. Galatasaray dropped to third and one point behind Trabzonspor who beat Samsunspor 3-0.
Flag-waving supporters dressed in Fenerbahce club's yellow and blue strip streamed into the streets near the stadium on the Asian side of Istanbul to celebrate the victory and car drivers sounded their klaxons across the city.
The victory of Fenerbahce was celebrated all across the country and some people were injured because of the salute shootings.
