Pinochet Hospitalized After Mild Stroke

Former dictator Gen. Augusto Pinochet was rushed to a hospital Thursday after suffering a mild stroke.

The Santiago Military Hospital said Pinochet was recovering well and would be allowed to return home after being evaluated. The 89-year-old former ruler has suffered at least two other mild strokes in the past.

A spokesman for Pinochet, retired Gen. Guillermo Garin, said Pinochet's condition was apparently not serious.

"I talked to the hospital by telephone and the conversation left me calm," Garin told The Associated Press. "Doctors do not want to take any risks, so they ordered the transfer to the hospital."
