ATHENS - Four people were injured early Thursday, one of them seriously, in a collision between a passenger train and a cargo train near the northern Greek town of Serres, a police source said.
The collision happened when the Greek driver of the passenger train did not wait for a signal to leave the station of Rodopoli, a small town near Serres, Greek media reported.
The four people injured in the accident, among them the Greek cargo train's Bulgarian driver, were taken to a hospital near Serres, the police source said.
Though serious, the Bulgarian driver's wounds are not believed to be life-threatening.
A fire that broke out in the cargo train's engine was contained by firefighters, said northern Greece's Macedonian News Agency (MNA).
The Hellenic Railways Organisation passenger train from Salonika to Serres had some 30 passengers on board, the MNA reported.
