Turkey Against Increasing Members Of U.N. Security Council

NEW YORK (AA) - Turkey is against the resolution increasing the number of members of the United Nations (UN) Security Council, Turkish diplomatic sources said on Tuesday.
     The resolution has been submitted by Germany, Japan, India and Brazil which seek permanent membership in the UN Security Council.
     The same sources said that Turkey was acting together with he group led by Italy and Pakistan, and noted that this group supported ''B model'' which envisaged new eight semi-permanent and one temporary membership.
     Noting that none of the models aiming to broaden the Security Council was in line with Turkey's interests, these diplomatic sources said that efforts serving this goal would not affect Turkey's candidacy for a temporary seat at the Security Council. But, they added, Turkey's temporary membership would be easier if Model B was adopted.
     Both the model A and model B proposes to increase the number of members of the Security Council from 15 to 24. Model A foresees six new permanent memberships and three new two-year temporary memberships to the Security Council, without the right to veto. On the other hand, Model B envisages eight semi-permanent memberships and a temporary two-year membership, also without the right to veto.
     At least 128 of the 191 members of the UN General Assembly have to cast in favor of this resolution to broaden the Security Council.
