BAGHDAD - Coalition troops killed five civilians Friday during an attack on their convoy in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, the US military said in a statement.
"Three terrorists were killed by multi-national forces when several vehicles used small arms fire to attack a military convoy in northern Iraq today," it said.
"The vehicles had attempted to ram the convoy and then began firing at multi-national force soldiers in Mosul; the return fire killed three terrorists and destroyed one vehicle.
"Two more vehicles approached the convoy appearing to be hostile. The soldiers fired on the vehicles disabling both. Five Iraqi civilians were killed as a result," the statement said.
The US military added the incident was under investigation.
Mosul lies some 370 kilometres (230 miles) north of Baghdad and is one of the bastions of the Sunni Arab insurgency.
