BERLIN - The German government is looking into ways of beefing up control of hedge funds, at the instigation of Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder himself, spokesman Bela Anda said on Friday.
The chancellor "clearly stated" at a recent meeting with the left wing of his Social Democrat (SPD) party "that it is necessary to take a very close look at these hedge funds," Anda told a regular news briefing here.
"More transparency and greater control will be the main points," Anda said.
There was "a great deal of interest" in Germany in attracting foreign capital in order to boost growth.
But Germany was not interested in "purely speculative capital that destroys jobs and breaks up companies," the spokesman said.
