TIKRIT, Iraq - At least 38 people were killed and 84 wounded Wednesday when a massive car bomb blasted a busy market square in Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit, north of Baghdad, police and medics said.
The increased toll, from a figure of 31 given earlier, followed the discovery of victims buried under rubble in a shop near the scene of the blast, said police lieutenant-colonel Ibrahim Abdullah.
Many of the victims in the blast in this small Sunni town 180 kilometres (110 miles) north of Baghdad were day labourers waiting to hire themselves out.
Police have banned anyone from driving a car alone in the city for fear of more attacks by suicide bombers.
